I piloti collaudatori Bob Leonard e Bob Carnahan, il 29 aprile 1991, ai comandi del prototipo del Cessna 525 CitationJet, decollarono dal Mid-Continent Airport di Wichita, raggiunsero la quota di 10.000 piedi e cominciarono le prime prove del ciclo di voli sperimentali del nuovo aeroplano.
Spinto da due turbofan Williams-Rolls FJ44, il CitationJet fu il primo aereo d’affari ad utilizzare l’ala a profilo laminare. Questa indovinata combinazione consentì una cabina più spaziosa, maggiore velocità ed autonomia rispetto al Citation originale ed al successore Citation I.
Il CitationJet, caratterizzato dagli impennaggi a T, fu un successo fin dal momento nel quale fu preannunciato, alla Convention NBAA del 1989. Il prezzo ed i costi di manutenzione del nuovo biz jet da sei posti attrassero subito numerosi nuovi clienti. Il CitationJet ed i modelli che ne sono derivati sono stati determinanti per portare a 6.100 il numero di Citation oggi in attività, la più numerosa flotta di aerei d’affari in servizio.
Per completare i collaudo in volo necessari al processo di certificazione del tipo, il prototipo del CitationJet fu affiancato da altri esemplari di preserie. La certificazione fu rilasciata dalla FAA nel 1992, e le consegne iniziarono l’anno sucessivo. Il nuovo CitationJet divenne rapidamente uno dei più venduti aerei d’affari di fascia bassa, dando origine ad un’intera famiglia di derivati. Mentre il nome veniva abbreviato in Citation CJ, sulla linea di montaggio si succedevano il CJ1, CJ1+, CJ2 e le versioni attualmente in produzione che sono il CJ2+, CJ3 e CJ4. La Cessna consegnò un totale di 359 CitationJets, mentre la famiglia della serie CJ, nel suo complesso, ha superato i 1.450 esemplari.

On April 29, 1991, test pilots Bob Leonard and Bob Carnahan, at the controls of Cessna 525 CitationJet prototype, took off from Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport, reached an altitude of 10,000 feet and checked handling and trim characteristics, engine response and more.
Powered by two Williams-Rolls FJ44 advanced turbofan engines, the CitationJet was the first business jet to use a true natural laminar-flow wing. These features allowed for a roomier cabin, faster speeds and more range than the original Citation 500 and its replacement, the Citation I.
The T-tailed CitationJet was a success from the moment it was announced at NBAA in 1989. The acquisition and maintenance costs of the new six-passenger aircraft attracted many first-time Citation owners. CitationJet and successive models were instrumental in Cessna today boasting 6,100 Citations, the largest fleet of business jets in the world.
The CitationJet prototype was eventually joined by other pre-production aircraft for the certification programme. FAA certification was achieved in 1992 and deliveries began in 1993. The new CitationJet rapidly became one of the world's most popular light jets and inspired an entire family of aircraft (the name was later shortened to Citation CJ): the CJ1, CJ1+, CJ2 and today's current production versions, the CJ2+, CJ3 and CJ4. Cessna delivered 359 CitationJets, and today the CJ series fleet has surpassed 1,450 aircraft.
