Deutsche Lufthansa ha siglato un memorandum d'intesa con Airbus per acquistare dieci esemplari dell'A 330-300, bireattore a medio raggio della famiglia A 330/A340. La decisione deve ora essere ratificata dal Supervisory Board del vettore tedesco. Le consegne degli aerei, la cui motorizzazione non è ancora stata decisa, inizieranno nel 2004.
L'A 330 non era ancora stato ordinato dalla Lufthansa che invece dispone già di una flotta di ben 34 A 340 con altri 10 in arrivo. Il nuovo aereo rappresenta un passo avanti nel piano di sviluppo a medio termine del materiale di volo della Lufthansa. Con il prossimo arrivo degli A 330, la compagnia avrà in linea quasi tutti i tipi prodotti da Airbus e sarà il più grande operatore al mondo di aerei di linea della famiglia A 330/A340.
La scelta della Lufthansa rafforza la posizione del duo A 330-A 340 nel mercato degli aerei di linea a medio-lungo raggio, con 750 ordini totali da parte di oltre 60 compagnie aeree. Per l'anno in corso, i due modelli Airbus hanno raccolto complessivamente il 76% degli ordini, rispetto alla concorrenza.

Deutsche Lufthansa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus to purchase ten A 330-300s, the medium-range twin from Airbus' A 330/A340 Family. This is subject to the approval of the German carrier Supervisory Board. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to begin in 2004. Engines have yet to be selected.
This is the first A 330 acquisition by Lufthansa who already operates a fleet of 34 A 340s with an additional 10 on commitment and marks the next step in Lufthansa's medium term fleet planning. With this A 330 order, the airline will be operating almost the entire Airbus aircraft family and will make Lufthansa the largest A 330/A340 Family operator in the world.
Lufthansa's selection of the A330 further reinforces the remarkable success of the A 330/A 340 Family as the preferred medium to long-range aircraft among airlines worldwide. The A 330/A 340 Family has booked some 750 total orders from more than 60 customers to date and has achieved 76 per cent of the market against its direct.
