Iberia ha annunciato oggi di aver scelto l'Airbus A 340-600 invece del B.777-300ER. Questa decisione è avvenuta dopo un lungo ed approfondito processo di valutazione condotto dall'Iberia per il programma di rinnovo della flotta a lungo-raggio. Ciò dimostra il livello di fiducia che Iberia, come la maggioranza delle principali compagnie aeree, ripone in Airbus e nei suoi prodotti. (L'Airbus si è aggiudicata più del 50% degli ordini fermi di aerei di linea, in tre degli ultimi quattro anni).
Con la sua decisione, Iberia diviene il 12° cliente ad aver scelto modelli della nuova famiglia a lungo raggio formata da A 340-500 e -600. Esistono impegni d'acquisto per 81 esemplari (72 ordini fermi ed i 9 preannunciati da Iberia), che rappresentano il 57% del mercato, nei confronti dei concorrenti diretti della famiglia a lungo raggio B.777-200LR e -300ER che, come attualmente riportato sul sito Boeing, hanno raccolto sinora 61 ordini da parte di sette compagnie.
Parecchi sondaggi indipendenti, condotti sulla categoria dei passeggeri d'affari, hanno rilevato che gran parte di loro pone particolare importanza al comfort durante i voli a lungo raggio e che, per questi viaggi, preferisce aerei con quattro motori. La gran maggioranza degli intervistati ha anche dichiarato di preferire la configurazione di cabina dell'A 340 rispetto a quella del B.777.
Gli Airbus A 340-500 e-600 sono i leader del mercato nella loro classe, sia in termini di aerei venduti che per numero dei clienti. Le recenti commesse da parte della SAA e dell'Iberia confermano che il settore ha bisogno di mezzi veramente a grande autonomia e riafferma l'importanza di operare con efficacia, con aerei quadrimotore, da aeroporti critici per l'alta temperatura o l'altitudine.
Le prestazioni dell'A 340-600 in termini di autonomia sono già state confermate dai nuovi voli non-stop Los Angeles-Hong Kong della Cathay Pacific. Nel 2003 anche Air Canada, Emirates e Singapore Airlines inaugureranno voli a lunghissimo raggio con gli A 340-500.

Iberia announced today it has selected the Airbus A 340-600 over the B.777-300ER. This decision follows a long and intensive evaluation process as part of Iberia's fleet renewal programme. It shows the level of confidence Iberia, as well as the majority of other leading airlines, have in Airbus and its products. (Airbus has booked over 50 percent of all industry firm orders in three of the last four years).
With this decision, Iberia becomes the 12th customer to select an aircraft from the new long-range A 340-500 and -600 Family, of which now a total of 81 have been committed to (72 firm orders plus nine committed to by Iberia), representing a 57 percent market share vs. its direct competitor, the B.777-200LR and -300ER long-range family (of which 61 aircraft have been ordered by seven customers, according to the latest information available on the Boeing website).
Many independent surveys of business flyers have confirmed that the vast majority placed significant importance on their comfort during long-range flights and preferred four-engined aircraft for those journeys, with the majority of respondents preferring the A 340 configuration over the B.777 by a significant factor.
The A 340-500 and -600 are market leaders in their class, both in terms of aircraft sold and customers. Recent sales to SAA and Iberia confirm the market need for genuine long-range capability and reaffirm the importance of being able to operate efficiently with four-engined aircraft from hot and from high altitude airports.
The long-range credentials of the A 340-600 have already been confirmed with the introduction of non-stop Los Angeles-Hong Kong services by Cathay Pacific. 2003 will also mark the inauguration of new ultra-long-range services by the A 340-500 with Air Canada, Emirates and Singapore Airlines.
