Nikolay ha partecipato al programma del Sukhoi Superjet 100 a partire dal 2003. Nel 2008 ha fatto il suo ingresso nella Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company come pilota collaudatore. Nel 1987, prima di entrare nel settore civile, Pushenko fu anche selezionato come cosmonauta per il programma spaziale Buran. Prior to joining the SCAC, Pushenko had been a test-pilot for State Institute for Civil Aviation for nine years, and participated in the testing and mastering of various types of Tupolev and Antonov aircraft. A 1974 graduate of Barnaul Higher Flight School, he specialized "cum laude" in 1983 at the Akhtuba Test-Pilot School. From 1983 till 1998 Pushenko was a test-pilot at the Chkalov Research Institute. Pushenko has experience not only with commercial aircraft, but also with high-performance military aircraft such as Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack, Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer and Mikojan Gurevič MiG-25 Foxbat. In 1987, before entering civil aircraft segment, Nikolay Pushenko was also selected as a cosmonaut for the Buran space programme. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is the 34th aircraft that he mastered.
