La ZLT - Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG e la Airship Ventures annunciano che oggi, nel cielo di Friedrichshafen, in Germania, ha volato per la prima volta la quarta aeronave Zeppelin NT 07.
Al termine dell'assemblaggio, il quarto esemplare dello Zeppelin NT è stato affidato al dipartimento prove volo della ditta per iniziare la fase di collaudo. I portoni dell'enorme hangar, lungo 110 metri, si sono aperti per lasciare uscire il dirigibile la cui costruzione era iniziata nal marzo 2007.
Nell'occasione, Robert Gritzbach, direttore tecnico della Zeppelin, ha detto: “Dopo il prototipo, si tratta del terzo esemplare di serie. Questa volta abbiamo introdotto alcune migliorie, riducendo il peso e migliorando di conseguenza le prestazioni. Anche la "vita a fatica" della struttura è stata virtualmente raddioppiata.”
E' stato un momento di orgoglio e commozione per tutti i presenti. Vedere un dirigibile che esce per la prima volta dall'hangar è una vera emozione. I motori sono stati accesi uno alla volta, poi il dirigibile si è staccato dall’autocarro/pilone e si è subito sollevato in aria. Il decollo è stato quasi verticale, con virata ad ovest verso il lago di Costanza ed inizio immediato dei controlli sui vari sistemi di bordo.
Ai comandi Fritz Günther, responsabile operativo della ditta costruttrice: “E' la terza volta che partecipo al primo volo di uno Zeppelin, ma questo fatto non riduce la soddisfazione che il nostro impegno è stato di nuovo coronato dal successo. Da pilota, mi auguro di poter presto confermare il miglioramento delle prestazioni dell'aeronave.” Nel frattempo sono arrivati in Germania due piloti della Airship Ventures, la compagnia che ha ordinato il dirigibile, per iniziare il corso di addestramento.
Sul lato destro del quarto Zeppelin NT è dipinto il logo della locale distilleria Leibinger, che produce la "Birra Zeppelin”. Sull'altro lato c'è il logo della Airship Ventures con la scritta “Going Places”, ed i marchi delle famose località californiane come la baia di San Francisco, il lago Tahoe, la Napa Valley, Moffett Field, la Treasure Island, Hollywood ed il Parco Nazionale di Yosemite, sulle quali si staglierà presto l’inconfondibile sagoma degli Zeppelin.

IL DIRIGIBILE ZEPPELIN NT 07
Il dirigibile Zeppelin NT 07, in grado di trasportare fino a 12 passeggeri, sarà la più grossa aeronave in attività negli Stati Uniti. Con una lunghezza di 75 metri, è 15 metri più lunga di qualunque "blimp" (dirigibile non rigido) made in USA. Il gruppo motopropulsore dello Zeppelin NT 07 è composto da tre motori a pistoni Textron Lycoming IO-360 da 140 kW (200 hp). Due sono sistemati sull’involucro, ai due lati della gondola passeggeri, e muovono un elica tripala traente, a passo variabile, girevole su un arco di 120° per variare la quota. Il terzo motore è in coda e muove una ventola laterale per il controllo dell’imbardata a bassa velocità ed il volo stazionario, più un elica vettorata propulsiva che contribuisce all’avanzanento del dell’aeronave ed al controllo longitudinale durante il decollo e l’atterraggio. Utilizzando il gas inerte elio per il sostentamento, e motori orientabili per la propulsione, lo Zeppelin NT vola senza il minimo problema, dal 1997, nei cieli del Giappone e della Germania.

ZLT - Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG and Airship Ventures today announced the successful first flight of the fourth, and latest, Zeppelin NT 07 airship over Friedrichshafen, Germany.
Construction of the fourth Zeppelin NT airship having recently been completed, the ship was handed over to the flight test department to begin the testing phase. The hangar doors opened and the airship left the 360 foot long hangar for the first time since the start of airframe assembly in March 2007.
Robert Gritzbach, Zeppelin VP of engineering, commented: “After the prototype being the third ship in our series production, we were able to incorporate a number of design improvements – reducing weight while increasing lift and achieving a near doubling of airframe lifetime – that make this our finest ship to date!”
A proud and long awaited moment for all involved, it is a special moment when a new airship exits the hangar for the first time. The engines having been started one by one, the airship was released from the mast truck, and right away started for the sky. Taking off nearly vertically, the ship proceeded to the calm air over Lake Constance to head right into her initial flight tests.
The first pilot to fly the airship, Fritz Günther, Zeppelin Flight Operations Manager, said “This is the 3rd Zeppelin for which I have been part of the maiden flight, and feeling of pride in knowing all our hard work has resulted in success never diminishes. As a pilot, I look forward to confirming the new performance characteristics.” In the meantime, two pilots of Airship Ventures have arrived in Germany and are training with their new ship.
Starting it’s long journey, on one side the airship carries the logo of the local brewery Leibinger, partner with Zeppelin group offering special “Zeppelin Beer”. On the other side, the Airship Ventures logo and “Going Places” branding evokes images of flightseeing trips to come, including iconic locations of California such as San Francisco Bay, Lake Tahoe, Napa Valley, Moffett Field, Treasure Island, Hollywood and Yosemite National Park.

ABOUT THE ZEPPELIN NT 07 AIRSHIP
The Zeppelin NT 07 airship, carrying up to 12 passengers, will be the largest airship flying in the US. At 246 feet (75 m) in length, it is more than 50 ft (15 m) longer than the largest blimp. The propulsion system of the Zeppelin NT 07 is formed by three 140 kW (200 hp) Textron Lycoming IO-360 flat-four piston engines. Two are placed in either side of the hull above the passenger gondola, each driving a three-blade, vectored-thrust, variable pitch, tractor propeller, swivelling up to 120° for manoeuvres. The third engine is installed in tailcone position, driving a lateral fan for precise yaw control at low speed and during hovering phase, and a vectored-thrust pushing propeller used in forward flight and for precise pitch control during take-off and landing. Using the inert gas helium for lift, and vectored thrust engines for flight, the Zeppelin NT has been flying with an unparalleled safety record since 1997, in Germany and Japan.
