AVIO DATA 1985 - In 1981 Luciano Bertolo, Sergio Mapelli, Giovanni Masino and Mauro Rossi, all of them former Air Spotter Association members, founded the informal Avio Data press agency and began to collaborate with the Jane’s Group publications and other aviation magazines in Italy and abroad. Three years later they edited AVIO DATA 1985 published by Elledi of Turin. It was a choral work covering the main aspects of the Italian civil aviation scene. Franco Vercelli offered his determining computer expertise. The first section of the reference book listed in tabular form all the aircraft present on the Italian Air Register in 1985. The other sections included the technical cards of all the types of aircraft active in Italy including a black and white photo, the list of all the national airlines and air-work operators and the list of all the airports.
AVIO DATA 2 - After the complimentary success of AVIO DATA 1985 (also abroad despite the Italian language) the editors were urged from more than one side to make AVIO DATA 1986, 1987 and so on. In that time, not surprisingly, the speakers of the air show meeting were consulting AVIO DATA 1985 to comment the exhibitions of the participating aircraft. However the “Tascabile dell’Aviazione Italiana” was not only a demanding work but, for regulatory shortcomings, small “clandestine” airfield and anonymous or fake identified ultra-lights aircraft were proliferating all over the Peninsula. The Avio Data editors were more and more unable to define a complete big picture of the Italian aviation scene accordingly to their initial will. They were also deeply engaged with the restorations of important historic aircraft because, just in 1985, they have been also the founder members of the Turin chapter of Gruppo Amici Velivoli Storici. Finally, in 1991, the Avio Data group decided to prepare a second edition of their booklet. It was titled Avio Data 2 to minimize the six-year gap from the first edition. Franco Vercelli returned to his computer to prepare the texts. Thanks to many advertisements, the book was printed all in colour and its general layout was identical to the 1985 edition. Some copies of AVIO DATA 2 are on sale on eBay. (Aeromedia)
