Il primo esemplare del Fairchild Dornier 728 è stato ufficialmente presentato al pubblico presso gli stabilimenti della ditta costruttrice ad Oberpfaffenhofen in Germania. Alla cerimonia di roll out del nuovo mini aereo di linea erano presenti parecchie centinaia di dipendenti ed invitati del mondo industriale, politico e della stampa. Il primo volo del nuovo aeroplano è previsto per la prossima estate e le prime consegne alla Lufthansa sono sempre programmate per il 2003.
I modelli successivi della famiglia 728, in fase di sviluppo, sono il 928 da 85-100 passeggeri e l'Envoy 7, versione "corporate" del 728. Ne sono già stati ordinati complessivamente 125 esempari, con altri 164 in opzione, da parte di società come Lufthansa, GECAS, Bavaria Leasing, CSA e l'italiana SolAir. Insieme al 328JET attualmente in produzione, l'ammontare delle ordinazioni della Fairchild Dornier' raggiunge gli 11,7 miliardi di dollari.

The first Fairchild Dornier 728 was presented to the public for the first time today at the company's facilities in Oberpfaffenhofen. Several hundred employees and guests from industry, government and the news media attended the debut of the most modern small airliner in the world. The aircraft is scheduled to make its maiden flight this summer, with first deliveries to Lufthansa set for next year.
Additional members of the 728 Family are currently in development. They include the 85-110-passenger 928 and the Envoy 7, the corporate version of the 728. Eight customers, among them Lufthansa, GECAS, Bavaria Leasing, CSA and SolAir, have already placed firm orders for a total of 125 aircraft and signed options for an additional 164. This brings Fairchild Dornier's order book, including the company's 32-seat 328JET, to $11.7 billion.
