La compagnia libanese Middle East Airlines (MEA) ha emesso un ordine per sei esempari del bireattore A 321, diventando un nuovo cliente dell'Airbus per questo tipo di aereo di linea. L'ordine ha confermato l'annuncio fatto dalla MEA all'inizio dell'anno, di voler comperare alcuni A 321 per rinnovare la flotta nel quadro della fase finale della ristrutturazione in atto.
MEA riceverà cinque A 321 tra gennaio e maggio del 2003 ed il sesto all'inizio del 2004. I motori prescelti sono gli International Aero Engines V2533, omologati per i livelli di rumorosità previsti dagli standard Stage 4. L'allestimento della cabina sarà per 31 passeggeri in prima classe e 118 in economica, con tutti i sedili dotati di schermo televisivo.
Tutta l'attuale flotta MEA è formata da aerei Airbus A 320, A 321, A 300 ed A 310, utilizzati su una rete che comprende destinazioni in Europa, Africa e nei vicini stati del Medio Oriente. Gli A 321 appena ordinati sostituiranno altrettanti A 320, A 321 ed A 310 attualmente operati in noleggio. Essi saranno affiancati da tre A 330-200 in leasing, in arrivo verso la fine del 2002, che rimpiazzeranno altri A 310 e gli A 300 sempre non di proprietà. Gli ordini fermi per gli aerei della famiglia A 320 stanno per raggiungere il traguardo dei 3.000 esemplari, 1.800 dei quali già consegnati.

Middle East Airlines (MEA) of the Lebanon has placed an order with Airbus for six A 321s, becoming a new customer for the type. The order confirms an announcement by the airline earlier this year, when it said that it would acquire A 321s as part of a fleet modernisation that is the last part of its re-structuring plan.
MEA will take delivery of five A 321s between January and May 2003, and a sixth in early 2004. The aircraft will be powered by International Aero Engines V2533s, which feature quietness that meets tough new Stage 4 noise standards. Their cabin will be configured for 31 passengers in business class and 118 in economy, with personal TVs for everyone.
MEA already flies an all-Airbus fleet comprising A 320s and A 321s, as well as A 300s and A 310s, on non-stop routes to Europe, Africa and within the Middle East. The newly ordered A 321s replace leased A 320s, A 321s and A 310s in the MEA fleet. They will be complemented by three leased A 330-200s, all of which will be delivered in the second quarter of 2003, which will replace leased A 300s and A 310s. Firm orders for the A 320 family now approach 3,000 aircraft, of which 1,800 have already been delivered.
