China Eastern Airlines ha ricevuto a Tolosa il primo dei cinque quadrimotori A 340-600 ordinati alla Airbus. Altri due esemplari si aggiungeranno alla flotta della compagnia entro l’anno, insieme a sette A 320. La consegna degli ultimi due A 340-600 è prevista nel corso del 2004. China Eastern diventa così il primo operatore di questo wide-body Airbus a lunghisimo raggio d’azione nella Cina continentale e quinto nel mondo dopo Virgin Atlantic Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, South African Airways ed Iberia.
Il nuovo aereo dispone di una cabina da 322 posti, con sistemazione per otto passeggeri in prima classe, 42 in Business e 272 in Economy, offrendo loro video interattivi con vari intrattenimenti.
“L’entrata in servizio dell’A 340-600 significa un grosso passo in avanti per lo sviluppo delle nostre rotte a lungo raggio,” ha dichiarato Ye Yigan, Chairman del gruppo China Eastern Airlines. “E’ anche un chiaro segno che la nostra compagnia aerea sta cominciando ad uscire dalla crisi che nei mesi scorsi ha colpito il commercio ed il turismo.” ha aggiunto.
“China Eastern Airlines è il primo e più importante cliente di Airbus in Cina. Fin dal 1985 collaboriamo strettamente con il gruppo China Eastern Airlines che oggi utilizza 70 nostri aeroplani,” ha commentato il presidente e CEO di Airbus Noël Forgeard.
Con quella che probabilmente è la cabina più silenziosa oggi sul mercato, l’A 340-600 è il modello più grande della famiglia Airbus A 330/A 340. Spinto da quattro turbofan Rolls-Royce Trent serie 500, il velivolo ha un raggio d’azione di 7.500 miglia nautiche pari a 13.500 chilometri.

China Eastern Airlines has taken delivery of its first A 340-600, the first of five on order from Airbus. Another two aircraft of the same type and seven A 320s will join the airline's fleet this year. Two more A 340-600s are scheduled for delivery in 2004. China Eastern herewith becomes the first operator of the ultra-long haul and high-capacity Airbus aircraft in the Chinese mainland, and the fifth worldwide, following Virgin Atlantic Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, South African Airways and Iberia.
The new aircraft features a spacious 322-seat layout, offering accommodation for eight passengers in First class, 42 in Business and 272 in Economy, and providing interactive videos and entertainment systems for all passengers.
“The entry of the A 340-600 into service marks the development of our long-haul operation,” said Ye Yigan, Chairman of the China Eastern Airlines group. “It is also a significant event showing that our airline starts walking out of the shadow of the recent crisis which has negatively affected trade and tourism.” he added.
“China Eastern Airlines is the earliest and largest customer of Airbus in China. Since 1985, the two sides have carried out a fruitful cooperation, with China Eastern Airlines group operating 70 Airbus aircraft today,” said Airbus President and Chief Executive Officer Noël Forgeard.
Featuring the quietest cabin in the sky, the A 340-600 is the largest variant of Airbus' A 330/A 340 Family. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Trent 500-series engines, the aircraft has a range of 13,500 km (7,500 nm).
