Kingfisher Airlines, la compagnia indiana con base a Mumbai, ha firmato un contratto d’acquisto per cinque Airbus A 340-500, più l’opzione per altrettanti esemplari. La consegna dei velivoli è prevista per il 2008. Gli A 340-500, spinti da turbofan Rolls-Royce Trent 500, sono dell’ultima versione, con peso massimo al decollo aumentato, e dunque in grado di trasportare un maggiore carico utile.
Kingfisher si sta rapidamente affermando come la nuova forza del trasporto aereo indiano, ed uno dei vettori in più rapica espansione. La flotta conta per ora su otto Airbus A 320 e quattro A 319 per le rotte interne, con altri 30 Airbus a corridoio singolo in via di consegna. Kingfisher ha anche ordinato cinque mega-body A 380, cinque A 330 ed altrettanti A 350, per sviluppare una rete di voli internazionali compresi quelli a lunghissimo raggio. Finora la futura flotta della Kingfisher prevede già più di 60 aerei forniti dal costruttore europeo.
"Con l’A 340-500, dotato di grandissima autonomia, potremo aprirci ad un mercato completamente nuovo. Per la prima volta saremo in grado di effettuare voli diretti dall’India agli Stati Uniti" ha dichiatato Vijay Mallya, Presidente dell’UB Group, la finanziaria che controlla Kingfisher Airlines.
L’interesse del mercato per le ultime versioni dell’A 340 aumenta il successo della famiglia di aerei formata da A 330, A 340 ed A 350 (che non ha ancora volato). Ne sono già stati ordinati più di 1.060 esemplari, da parte di 72 compagnie aeree. In particolare, sono stati venduti 140 Airbus A 340-500/-600 (le versioni avanzate dell’A 340) a 14 clienti diversi. Mentre 710 esemplari di A 330 ed A 340 sono complessivamente in servizio in tutto il mondo, con quasi 80 operatori. Il portafoglio ordini comprende oggi oltre 300 aeroplani nelle versioni in produzione.

Kingfisher Airlines, the carrier headquartered in Mumbai, India signed a contract for five Airbus A 340-500 and an option for five more. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2008. The A 340-500s, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines, are the latest high gross weight versions, allowing higher payloads to be transported.
Kingfisher is a rapidly growing force in Indian civil aviation already and has become one of the country’s largest airlines. It already flies eight Airbus A 320s and four Airbus A 319s on domestic routes and will receive 30 more single aisle aircraft from Airbus in the near future. Kingfisher has also placed firm orders for five A 380 mega-bodies, five A 330s and five A 350s for use on long-range international and regional services. So far, Kingfisher’s Airbus Family fleet will grow to more than 60 aircraft.
"With the A 340-500 ultra long haul aircraft, we will open up a completely new market. For the first time, we will be able to offer direct non-stop services between India and the USA" said Dr Vijay Mallya, Chairman of Kingfisher Airlines’ parent company UB Group.
Customer interest in the new A 340s reinforces the success of the A 330/A 340/A 350 Family. So far over 1,060 aircraft of this Family have been ordered by 72 customers. More than 140 Airbus A 340-500/-600 (the current A 340 versions) have been sold to 14 customers. 710 A 330s and A 340s are in service worldwide, with almost 80 operators. There is an order backlog of more than 300 aircraft.
