Il 28 ottobre scorso, con una cerimonia tenutasi presso lo stabilimento Agusta di Vergiate, è stato consegnato il primo dei quattro elicotteri Bell/Agusta Aerospace Company AB 139 ordinati dall’Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). Gli AB 139 saranno utilizzati nelle remote zone montuose dell’Asia centro-meridionale, per supportare la costruzione di tre nuovi atenei della University of Central Asia (UCA).
L’UCA, che è la prima università internazionale a dedicarsi esclusivamente ai problemi ed ai bisogni di comunità insediate in luoghi quasi inaccessibili, servirà un bacino potenziale di 40 milioni di persone nella sola Asia centrale. La University of Central Asia, voluta dai presidenti del Kazakistan, del Kirghizistan, del Tagikistan e dall’Aga Khan stesso, punta a sviluppare l’economia e le condizioni sociali delle popolazioni che abitano in quelle desolate zone montuose. Gli AB 139 saranno basati a Bišhkek (Kirghizistan), a Dušanbe (Tagikistan) e ad Islamabad (Pakistan).
“La nostra attività nelle aree settentrionali del Pakistan ha già ampiamente dimostrato i vantaggi dell’uso degli elicotteri per gli interventi a favore delle popolazioni, sia in termini di velocità che di efficacia.” Ha dichiarato Sua Altezza l’Aga Khan, fondatore e Presidente della AKDN.

In a handover ceremony on 28 October at Agusta Vergiate plant, Italy, the first of four Bell/Agusta Aerospace Company AB 139 helicopters for the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) was delivered. The AB 139s will be operated in the remote and mountainous regions of South and Central Asia to ferry personnel and material for the construction of the three University of Central Asia (UCA) campuses.
The UCA, which is the first international university anywhere in the world dedicated to the problems and needs of mountain communities, will reach 40 million potential beneficiaries in Central Asia alone. Founded by the Presidents of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, and the Aga Khan, the University aims to foster economic and social development throughout the vast and impoverished mountain zones of Central Asia. The AB 139s will be based in Bišhkek (Kyrgyz Republic), Dušanbe (Tajikistan) and Islamabad (Pakistan).
“Our experience in the Northern Areas of Pakistan shows that the logistical efficiencies gained from the use of helicopters have had a positive impact on the beneficiaries in terms of the speed, efficiency and quality of development activities,” says His Highness the Aga Khan, AKDN’s founder and Chairman.
