Major European Airports: Traffic Data for Year 2000

ACI Europe, the council of European airports, released preliminary 2000 traffic statistics of member airports. Although important airports like Athens are still not part of the association, some first-hand considerations are possible. Only airports handling 10M+ passengers are listed as single instances, also if they form part of a local airport system.
London/Heathrow maintains its leading position in Europe, though it is apparently nearing saturation, as pointed out by the slow growth rates with respect to 1999. Two other London area airports are also in the list: Gatwick with more than 32 million passengers on its single runway and Stansted, with an impressive +25,6% passenger growth. Luton is not included being a mere six million passenger airport!
Frankfurt, both Paris airports (Roissy ed Orly), Amsterdam, Madrid (in very strong growth), Rome/Fiumicino, Munich and Zurich rank also in the first ten busiest European airports, all of them being well over the twenty million passenger mark. All the capital cities of "western" Europe are listed, apart from Lisbon which falls just short of the ten million passenger target.
In 2000, all 26 "over 10 million" European airports recorded passenger growth; half a dozen of them suffered slight cargo traffic reductions while a few registered down-turns in aircraft movements. If major European airports are still running fast, in some cases there are signs that capacity limits are very close. If air traffic can maintain its current sustained pace, a significant part of new routes will most likely need diversion to other airports not comprised in the present continental hub system.
