Italian Airport Traffic Data 2000

ACI Europe, the council of European airports, released 2000 preliminary traffic statistics, compared to 1999, of Italian member airports. Although Cagliari, Catania, Genoa, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Treviso and some other minor commercial airports are still not members of ACI Europe, some first-hand considerations are possible at national level.
Fiumicino stands as major Italian airport totalling slightly less than 26 million passengers. The Rome airport system (Fiumicino+Ciampino) had almost the same combined traffic of Linate and Malpensa, the traditional Milan area airports. Both Fiumicino and Ciampino enjoyed good growth rates in respect of 1999; the positive results of Malpensa are related to the contemporary down-turn of Linate.
Regarding the other Italian "single" airports, Naples and Venice exceeded four million passengers, Bologna was over three millions and an half and Turin close to three millions. Verona followed at more than two millions, Bari (+29,5%) and Bergamo airports exceeded one million passenger level. A little more than half million passengers were totalledby Brindisi (+28,5%) and Trieste in 2000. The Balkan crisis badly affected commercial air traffic in South-east Italy early in 1999.
