Thomas Cook AG ha piazzato direttamente il suo primo ordine per nuovi aerei di linea. Il relativo contratto d'acquisto, per due esemplari di Airbus A 320, è stato firmato a Tolosa il 25 giugno scorso.
I due aerei, spinti da turbofan CFM56-B4 e configurati in classe unica, saranno consegnati all'inizio del 2003. Uno sarà operato dalla Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium e l'altro dal vettore charter britannico JMC Airlines. Quest'ultimo sarà il primo aereo della JMC ad entrare in linea con la nuova colorazione della Thomas Cook, in base al recente orientamento del gruppo turistico riguardo all'immagine dei velivoli delle compagnie aeree collegate. Gli A 320 sono destinati al mercato dei voli turistici nell'area mediterranea. Circa 220 aerei della famiglia A 320 sono attualmente utilizzati in Europa da compagnie charter o "low-fare".
Iberia, a sua volta, ha firmato due giorni dopo con Airbus un contratto per l'acquisto di tre esemplari di A 340-600, il più grosso modello Airbus oggi in produzione. Essi si affiancheranno, a partire dal giugno 2003, all'attuale flotta di A 340-300 dell'Iberia e saranno utilizzati sui voli dall'aeroporto di Madrid/Barajas a Città del Messico e Buenos Aires. Gli A 340-600 prenderanno il posto degli ultimi veterani B.747 ancora in servizio con il vettore spagnolo. La configurazione interna richiesta dall'Iberia prevede 342 posti. Potenziati da quattro turbofan Rolls Royce Trent 500, gli aerei saranno equipaggiati con quanto di meglio offre il mercato per quanto riguarda l'intrattenimento a bordo ed i sistemi di comunicazione con la terraferma per i passeggeri.
"L'A 340-600, fratello maggiore degli A 340-300, contribuirà a consolidare la nostra posizione di leader nei collegamenti tra l'Europa e le Americhe, ed in particolare in quelli giornalieri con tutte le principali città dell'America Latina", ha dichiarato Xabier de Irala, presidente Iberia. "Inoltre gli aspetti operativi comuni degli A 340 con la nostra flotta di A 320 non mancherà di creare significative economie di esercizio."
Iberia, cliente Airbus dal 1978 e maggiore nell'Europa meridionale, ha ordinato in tutto 101 aerei dal costruttore europeo, tra i quali ventun A 340 e settantaquattro aerei della famiglia A 320. Attualmente ha in linea diciassette A 340, quattro A 319, cinquantacinque A 320 e quattro A 321.

Thomas Cook AG has placed its first ever order for new aircraft under the Thomas Cook name. A contract for the purchase of two Airbus A 320 single-aisle aircraft has been signed on 25 June at the Airbus Headquarters in Toulouse.
Both aircraft, powered by CFM56-B4 engines and with a single-class layout, will be delivered beginning of 2003. One will be operated by Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium and one by the British holiday carrier JMC. It will be the first aircraft for JMC Airlines to be delivered in the new Thomas Cook livery, in line with the Group's recent announcement of a new corporate brand strategy for its fleet. The A 320s are going to serve holiday destinations around the Mediterranean. Nearly 220 A 320 Family aircraft are in operation or committed specifically for the European tourism and low-fare industry.
Iberia has signed on June 27, 2002, a contract with Airbus for the purchase of three of Airbus' latest and largest airliner, the A 340-600. The aircraft will join Iberia's current fleet of A 340-300s from June 2003, and will be operated on the Spanish flag carrier's routes from Madrid/Barajas airport to Mexico City and Buenos Aires. The A 340-600s will replace the carrier's last ageing B.747s currently in service. Iberia's configuration of the new aircraft features a spacious 342-seat layout. Powered by four Rolls Royce Trent 500 engines, the aircraft will also be equipped with the very latest in passenger entertainment and communication systems.
"The A 340-600, which is the A 340-300's larger sister, will contribute to furthering our leadership in the highly competitive American market, especially on routes to Latin America where we offer daily links to all main cities", said Xabier de Irala, President of Iberia. "In addition the A 340's operational commonality with our single-aisle A 320 fleet generates remarkable cost savings."
Iberia, an Airbus customer since 1978, and the largest in Southern Europe, has ordered a total of 101 aircraft from Airbus, comprising 21 A 340s and 74 A 320 Family aircraft. Currently, Iberia operates a fleet of 17 A 340s, four A 319s, 55 A 320s and four A 321s.
