Il vettore australiano Skywest Airlines ha preso oggi in consegna il suo primo ATR 72-500, che è anche il primo aereo di questo tipo, in assoluto, ad operare nel continente "Downunder". Skywest Airlines utiizzerà i suoi nuovi ATR per conto della Virgin Australia, in base ad un accordo decennale firmato di recente dalle due società per dar vita ad una rete di collegamenti regionali per la Virgin Australia.
Questa consegna fa seguito al contratto d'acquisto di 4 ATR 72-500 e 4 ATR 72-600s, più 5 opzioni, firmato all'inizio dell'anno tra il costruttore franco-italiano ed il noleggiatore Avation PLC. Gli altri tre ATR 72-500 saranno consegnati entro l'anno ed i "serie 600" quello prossimo. Tutti questi velivoli saranno dipinti nella livrea bianca e rossa della Virgin Australia.
Inizialmente la flotta di ATR sarà introdotta nell'area orientale dell'Australia, su nuove rotte da Brisbane verso Gladstone e Port Macquarie. La rete di voli regionali si espanderà progressivamente nei prossimi anni. Gli ATR 72 sostituiranno man mano altrettanti ERJ-170 della Virgin Australia che, su determinate rotte, consumano più carburante con minimo risparmio nel tempo di volo.
Skywest Airlines ha iniziato la propria attività quasi mezzo secolo fa, ed attualmente collega 14 scali che comprendono Perth (Western Australia), Darwin (Northern Territory) e Melbourne, nello stato sud-orientale di Victoria. La rete di collegamenti ne comprende uno internazionale per Denpasar, nell'isola indonesiana di Bali. Il vettore australiano trasporta circa 800.000 passeggeri all'anno, con una flotta di biturboelica Fokker 50 e bireattori Fokker 100. Da poco è anche entrato in linea il primo Airbus A 320, che ha portato la flotta Skywest ad un totale di 18 aerei.
A sua volta, il Virgin Australia Group of Airlines comprende il vettore domestico Virgin Australia, il vettore internazionale a lungo raggio V Australia e quelli a corto raggio Pacific Blue e Polynesian Blue, quest'ultimo gestito in collaborazione con lo stato dell'isola di Samoa. Le quattro società, complessivamente, utilizzano 88 aerei di linea (Boeing B.737, B.777, Airbus A 330 ed Embraer E-Jets) su una rete di 31 destinazioni interne e 17 internazionali.

Australian carrier Skywest Airlines today took delivery of its first ATR 72-500, which is also the very first ATR 72 aircraft in Australia. Skywest Airlines will operate its new ATR fleet on behalf of Virgin Australia, as part of a 10-year agreement signed recently between both airlines to create a regional network for Virgin Australia.
Today’s first delivery follows the signature of a contract for 4 ATR 72-500s and 4 ATR 72-600s, plus 5 options, inked earlier this year between ATR and the leasing company Avation PLC. The remaining 3 ATR 72-500s will be delivered this year, while the 4 ATR 72-600s will enter into service in 2012. All of these ATR 72s will wear the new white and red livery of Virgin Australia.
Initially, the new ATR fleet will operate on Australia’s east coast, including new regional routes from Brisbane to Gladstone and Brisbane to Port Macquarie. This regional network will expand progressively in 2011 and 2012 with the addition of new destinations. The fuel-efficient ATR 72s will progressively replace Virgin Australia’s E-170 regional jets while enabling the introduction of new services and additional frequencies on existing routes. The new ATR aircraft are configured with 68 new-generation seats with a 31-inch seat pitch, and fitted with the latest Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127M engines.
Skywest Airlines has been in operation for nearly 50 years, and currently flies to 14 destinations. Skywest operates flights across regional Western Australia as well as to Darwin, in the Northern Territory and Melbourne, in Australia’s south-east corner. It also flies internationally to Denpasar, on the Indonesian island of Bali. The airline carries over 800,000 with a fleet of Fokker 50 turboprops and Fokker 100 jet aircraft. Recently, Skywest also acquired its first 162-seat Airbus A 320, bringing the total fleet to 18 aircraft.
