Avensa Ceases Venezuela-Europe Services

Some months ago Avensa (Aerovias Venezolanas SA) suspended their European scheduled passenger flights. It gave back two intercontinental DC-10-30 to the owner. The remaining DC-9 and three B.727s remain in domestic activity. An agreement with another Venezuelan airline, Aserca, may resurrect services to Europe.
Passenger flights towards Europe ceased a first time in 1997 when Viasa (Vias Internacionales Aèreas SA) went bankrupt. This airline was jointly formed in 1960 by Avensa e LAV (Linea Aeropostal Venezolana) to merge their respective international activities. LAV started operations in 1935 and Avensa eight years later.
In the meantime two new airlines, TransVen and Roraima Airlines made their aggressive debut on the Venezuelan air transport scene.
