Il primo di quattro elicotteri AgustaWestland AW 139 per gli Irish Air Corps è stato formalmente consegnato da Bruno Spagnolini, amministratore delegato AgustaWestland, al Brigadiere Generale James, Comandante degli Irish Air Corps, alla presenza del Maggiore Generale Pat Nash, Vice Capo di Stato Maggiore (Operazioni) delle Irish Defence Forces. La cerimonia, svoltasi a Vergiate, ha segnato la prima consegna di un AW 139 ad una forza armata.
L’elicotterò resterà in Italia per l’addestramento dei piloti irlandesi fino alla fine di ottobre, quando sarà consegnato il secondo esemplare. Gli AW 139 per gli Irish Air Corps sono predisposti con vari “equipaggiamenti di missione” come le radio tattiche AM/FM, una telecamera Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) che trasmette su un quinto schermo LCD installato sul pannello della strumentazione. La cabina può essere rapidamente riconfigurata dal trasporto truppe, con dieci sedili a prova d’urto, all’evacuazione sanitaria, con barelle, attrezzature mediche e sedili per gli infermieri. Ulteriori role equipment comprendono cavi da discesa e verricello, oltre alla predisposizione per due mitragliatrici brandeggiabili.
L’AW 139 è stato scelto dell’Irish Department of Defence nel dicembre 2004, dopo una serrata competizione con altri tipi di elicottero. Poco dopo era stato siglato un contratto per quattro esemplari più due in opzione. Gli Irish Air Corps utilizzeranno il mezzo in svariati ruoli che comprendono il trasporto di truppe speciali delle Defence Forces, l’eliambulanza, la ricerca e soccorso su zone terrestri ed il trasporto personalità.
L’AW 139 è propulso da due turboalberi Pratt & Whitney PT6C-67C da 1.679 shp al decollo, che danno all’elicottero notevoli prestazioni hot and high e grande sicurezza in caso di spegnimento di un motore. La spaziosa cabina di 8 metri cubi con due ampi portelloni scorrevoli permette l’agevole imbarco e sbarco di truppe e materiali. N cabina l’equipaggio dispone di avionica completamente digitale su schermi LCD, con autopilota duplex, flight management system con GPS e sistema di radionavigazione.
A metà 2006 erano già stati venduti 190 esemplari di AW 139, prima noto come AB 139, facendone il bimotore medio di maggior successo commerciale. Quaranta esemplari sono già stati consegnati a numerosi clienti in Europa, Asia, Africa, Nord America e Medio Oriente.

The first of four AgustaWestland AW 139 helicopters for the Irish Air Corps was handed over by Mr. Bruno Spagnolini, AgustaWestland’s Managing Director to Brigadier General James, General Officer Commanding, Irish Air Corps, in the presence of Major General Pat Nash, Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Irish Defence Forces, at Vergiate in Italy yesterday. This handover also marks the first delivery of an AW 139 to a military customer.
Flying training of Air Corps pilots will now start and will continue until late October, when the second helicopter will be handed over.The AW 139 helicopters for the Irish Air Corps are fitted with a range of role equipment including AM/FM tactical radios, a Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) camera with a fifth cockpit LCD mission display. In the cabin the aircraft can be quickly reconfigured from the troop transport role with ten crashworthy troop seats to the medical evacuation role with air ambulance equipment plus seats for attendants. Additional role equipment includes abseiling and fast rope systems as well as a dual machine gun installation.
The AW 139 was selected by the Irish Department of Defence in December 2004, after a full evaluation of the aircraft against several competitors. Soon after a contract was signed for four aircraft plus two options. The Irish Air Corps will use the aircraft for a range of duties including transport of special operation units of the Defence Forces, air ambulance, overland search and rescue and VIP transport.
The AW 139 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PT6C-67C engines each rated at 1,679 shp for take-off, giving the aircraft class leading hot and high performance as well as unmatched single engine safety. The large unobstructed 8 cubic meters cabin with large sliding doors allows easy access and egress for troops and equipment. In the cockpit the aircrew have a fully integrated digital avionics and cockpit display system, which includes a duplex autopilot, flight management system with GPS and a radio navigation system.
Over 190 AW 139 helicopter have been ordered by mid-2006 making it the best selling helicopter in the medium twin class. Over 40 aircraft have now been delivered to customers in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and the Middle East.
