Boeing ed Icelandair hanno annunciato oggi un ordine fermo per due nuovi aerei di linea B.787 Dreamliner con i quali il vettore intende modernizzare la flotta ed espandere l’attività a lungo raggio dall’Islanda. Icelandair ha ordinato la versione B.787-800 che sarà consegnata ad iniziare dal 2010. La compagnia aerea sta ancora valutando le due opzioni per i propulsori: General Electric GENX (GE Next Generation) e Rolls-Royce Trent 1000. Il valore della transazione, a prezzi di listino, si aggira sui 240 milioni di dollari.
Al momento gli ordini e gli impegni per il B.787 annunciati dalla Boeing ha raggiunto quota 193 esemplari. Icelandair diventa la sedicesima compagnia ad aver scelto il B.787 in appena dieci mesi dalla data di lancio del Dreamliner, avvenuta nell’aprile 2004. Il primo volo è previsto nel 2007 e l’entrata in servizio l’anno successivo.
I nuovi B.787 contribuiranno ad intensificare il particolare flusso di traffico tra Europa e Nord America che transita per l’Islanda. Attualmente Icelandair collega la propria base di Keflavik con sei scali negli Stati Uniti e 16 in Europa. Il vettore utilizza 19 B.757 e B.767 per la sua rete di voli di linea e per quelli charter e cargo operato dall’Icelandair Group. A sua volta la società capofila, Flugleidir Iceland Group, ha comperato il mese scorso dieci nuovi B.737 destinati all’attività di leasing ad operatori terzi.

Boeing and Icelandair today announced a firm order for two all-new B.787 Dreamliner airplanes with which the carrier will expand its operations on long-range routes from Iceland, and develop its fleet. Icelandair ordered The B.787-800 version, which will be delivered during 2010. The carrier is evaluating the two engine options, the General Electric GENX (GE Next Generation) and Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000. The order is worth $240 million at list prices.
Boeing now has 193 announced orders and commitments for the 787. Icelandair becomes the 16th airline to select the B.787 in just 10 months following the Dreamliner's launch in April 2004. The first flight is scheduled for 2007, with entry into service during 2008.
The B.787 will support Icelandair's expansion of its transfer traffic through Iceland by opening new markets in North America and elsewhere. Currently, the airline uses Keflavik (Iceland) as a hub between six US gateway cities and 16 European destinations. The carrier operates 19 B.757s and B.767s for its scheduled service and Icelandair Group charter and cargo businesses. Its parent company, Flugleidir Iceland Group, last month purchased 10 Boeing Next-Generation 737s for its growing leasing venture.
