Si tratta dei devastanti effetti della diminuzione del traffico aereo passeggeri e merci dovuto alla crisi mondiale.
Il B.737 continua ad essere il modello di maggiore successo nel 2009, con 372 consegne e 197 ordini lordi (488 nel 2008). Tra i tipi "a doppio corridoio", il B.777 guida la classifica con 88 esemplari consegnati (61 nel 2008) e 19 ordini netti (54 nel 2008). Nel 2009, la recessione planetaria ha dominato l'andamento del mercato degli aerei commerciali, spingendo i vettori a rivedere i programmi di acquisto a breve e medio termine.
Il 15 dicembre 2009 ha volato per la prima volta il B.787 Dreamliner, con le prime consegne previste ora per fine 2010. Si prevede che il B.747-8 Freighter effettuerà il primo volo tra breve, con consegne iniziali verso fine anno. Le consegne della versione passeggeri B.747-8 Intercontinental è prevista verso la fine del 2011.

Boeing recorded 481 commercial airplane deliveries in 2009 (375 in 2008, due to a strike that halted commercial production for several weeks). The Commercial Airplanes backlog remains strong at 3,375 airplanes (3.700 at the end of 2008). Boeing registered 263 gross and 142 net commercial orders for the year (662 in 2008) as air travel and freight declined and carriers worldwide experienced severe economic challenges.
The B.737 continued its reign as the industry workhorse with 372 deliveries. The airplane also topped Boeing's order book with 197 gross orders (488 in 2008). The B.777 led Boeing's twin-aisle programmes with 88 deliveries (61 in 2008) and 19 net orders (54 in 2008). The global recession presided as an oppressive market reality in 2009, driving many carriers to re-evaluate their near- and medium-term fleet requirements.
First flight of the B.787 Dreamliner took place on December 15, 2009, with first delivery scheduled for fourth-quarter 2010. The B.747-8 Freighter is slated for first flight early this year with first delivery planned for fourth-quarter 2010. Delivery of the B.747-8 Intercontinental passenger airplane is planned for fourth-quarter 2011.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes highlights in 2009 included:
