First C-27J for Romania Makes Maiden Flight

On June 19, 2009, the first C-27J destined to the Romanian Air Force made its maiden flight. On December 7, 2007, Alenia Aeronautica has signed with Romtechnica – the National Company for Foreign Trade of the Romanian Ministry of Defence - a contract of around €217 millions for the procurement of seven Spartan tactical transport aircraft.
The contract includes services such as pilots training, initial logistic support and the procurement of a flight simulator to be based in Bucharest. An industrial offset programme with the Balkan country is also envisaged.
The Romanian Air Force had selected the C-27J in November 2006, preferring it to the EADS CASA C-295M, since the Spartan was competitive in financial terms and fully satisfying the Romanian Defence Ministry’s technical requirements.
