Turin/Caselle Airport: Positive Traffic Prospects

The 1999/2000 winter schedule for the Turin/Caselle airport, started October 27, is going to add, in the coming weeks, 14 more daily flights, both at domestic and international level.
After progressive traffic diversions from Turin to Malpensa, Alitalia opened a connection to Lamezia Terme, three time a week, and increased their Turin-Rome daily flights to 11, using brand new Airbus 320s and, in the peak hours, the larger A 321s.
Air One is going to add a fifth frequency to the four Turin-Rome daily flights introduced October 4. The winter schedule of the all 737 Italian private carrier also includes two new daily destinations, Naples and Bari.
From December 13 on, Iberia will add a daily Turin-Madrid flight to its succesful Turin-Barcelona service, operated by Iberia subsidiary Air Nostrum with Fokker 50 aircraft. The new Iberia connection to the Spanish capital will be operated by Air Nostrum with 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet. A Turin-Madrid flight is already offered by Portugalia.
Air France, starting November 29, added a fifth daily Turin-Paris/Charles de Gaulle connection, operated with Airbus A 320s. This type of aircraft is progressively replacing ageing B.737-200s.
Lufthansa has decided to compete with Air France on the Turin-Paris route announcing three daily flights operated by 50-pax Canadair Regional Jet.
Good news also from the cargo traffic side: from October 11, UPS started a B.727 parcel service Turin-Koln, from monday to friday.
This Turin/Caselle significant increase of activity, especially by the foreign carriers, may be related to the impending and unwelcome total move of international services from Milan/Linate to Malpensa. In any case, these positive results are key element in the forthcoming partial privatisation of SAGAT, the Turin airport management agency.
