Di fronte a 150 ospiti, l'elicottero da trasporto medio CH-53GA ha effettuato il primo volo nel cielo di Donauwörth, in Baviera. Ai comandi c'erano il pilota collaudatore Rene Nater e l'ingegnere di volo Antoine Van Gent. Questo primo volo cade esattamente tre anni dopo l'assegnazione del contratto e rappresenta un traguardo importante per il programma CH-53GA, condotto in collaborazione tra il Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (Agenzia Federale per le Tecnologie della Difesa e le Forniture). L'attività si svolge presso il Centro Eurocopter dedicato al supporto dei mezzi ad ala rotante dell'esercito tedesco.
Grazie agli aggiornamenti previsti, la vita operativa di queste macchire sarà estesa fino al 2030. L'inizio dei voli di familiarizzazione per i piloti sono previsti per l'inizio del 2011, con le consegne dei primi esemplari "retrofittati" durante lo stesso anno. I CH-53A, già in servizio da 35 anni, saranno aggiornati in base a requisiti funzionali che hanno comportato l'adozione di:
- Sistema di controllo del volo con schermi ed avionica digitale;
- Nuovo sistema di navigazione e capacità di volo nelle condizioni richieste dalle norme internazionali IFR;
- Integrazione di un nuovo sistema di controllo del volo AFCS/4-assi-autopilota, con hovering automatico;
- Serbatoi ausiliari in cabina per aumentare il raggio d'azione fino a 1.200 km;
- Aggiornamento dell'impianto di comunicazione per operare insieme ad elicotteri come Tiger ed NH 90;
- Integrazione di un pacchetto di equipaggiamenti di missione che comprende il sensore FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared);
- Sistema di comunicazione satellitare (SatCom);
- EWS (Electronic Warfare System) per autodifesa ed identificazione delle minacce.
L'attività di trasformazione in serie dei CH-53G si svolgerà a Donauwörth tra il 2011 ed il 2013. I primi esemplari di CH-53GA saranno consegnati all'esercito tedesco (Heer) prima della fine del 2011.
Il Centro Eurocopter di Donauwörth applicherà tutte le modifiche previste ad un totale di 40 elicotteri da trasporto Sikorsky CH-53G, configurandoli nella nuova versione CH-53GA. L’attività comprende un completo controllo strutturale e quegli interventi necessari ad estendere la vita “di progetto” da 6.000 a 10.000 ore di volo. Tutto l’impianto elettrico, dopo 35 anni, sarà completamente sostituito. Lo stabilimento Eurocopter di Donauwörth si è notevolmente ampliato negli ultimi vent'anni; dai 69 addetti del 1991 si è passati a 530, con tendenza ancora in crescita.

The CH-53GA medium-lift military transport helicopter successfully completed its maiden flight over the Bavarian town of Donauwörth today before an admiring crowd of approximately 150 guests. Eurocopter test pilot Rene Nater and flight engineer Antoine Van Gent were at the controls. This first flight came just three years after the contract was awarded, and represents a major milestone for the CH-53GA programme in cooperation with the Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (Federal Agency for Defense Technology and Procurement), as well as for Eurocopter Germany's support centre for the German Army helicopters.
Thanks to the new upgrades, the helicopter’s service life has been extended to 2030. Training flights are slated for early 2011, with the first deliveries of the retrofitted helicopters later in the same year. The following major functional requirements for the CH-53GA - in service for over 35 years - have been defined and embodied:
- Improved display and flight control systems via state-of-the-art digital avionics;
- Advanced accurate navigation system and improved flight capabilities in line with international IFR regulations;
- Integration of a new automatic flight control system AFCS/4-axis-autopilot, with automatic hovering;
- Installation of auxiliary fuel tanks in the cabin to increase the range to 1,200 km;
- Upgrade of communication equipment for joint missions with Tiger and NH 90 helicopters;
- Integration of a modular mission equipment package including FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared);
- Satellite communication system (SatCom);
- Electronic warfare system (EWS) for self-defense and identification of threats.
Production work on the CH-53GA is scheduled to start at the Donauwörth plant in 2011 and continue through 2013. The first helicopters will be made available to the German Army before the end of 2011.
Eurocopter’s support center for German Army helicopters at Donauwörth is under contract to retrofit a total of 40 Sikorsky CH-53G troop and transport helicopters to new CH-53GA configuration. The work includes the repair of airframe fatigue due to extensive use and ageing in order to extend the helicopters’ design life from 6,000 to 10,000 flight hours. The entire electrical system, which is nearly 35 years old, will also be replaced. The center has experienced substantial growth over the last twenty years; the work force of 69 employees in 1991 has increased to 530 employees today, and still shows an upward trend.
