La Diamond Aircraft Industries ed Austro Control, l'ente tecnico-aeronautico austriaco, hanno completato con successo l'iter di certificazione JAA-JAR 23 del DA 40 TDI Diamond Star, il primo aereo con motore diesel ad entrare in produzione di serie. I tecnici della Diamond hanno raggiunto questo risultato in appena un anno di attività, abbinando il nuovissimo propulsore turbo-diesel tedesco Thielert Centurion 1.7 ad una cellula modificata del quadriposto DA 40 Diamond Star.
Il velivolo che ne è scaturito è in grado di mantenere una velocità di crociera di 100 nodi con appena il 40% della potenza (10,3 litri di combustibile all'ora diconsumo). Gran parte dei modelli tradizionali raggiungono questa velocità con almeno il 65% della potenza e consumi ben più elevati. Il motore diesel del DA 40 TDI, regolabile tramite un comando unico, utilizza combustibili relativamente meno cari, come il JET A-1 o, in seguito, il normale gasolio automobilistico, ed offre consumi inferiori circa del 50% e dunque maggior raggio d'azione senza aumentare la capacità dei serbatoi a scapito del carico utile. Il motore Thielert ha una vita operativa di 2.400 ore e la ditta garantische l'invio di un motore nuovo di fabbrica alla scadenza del TBR (Time Between Replacement), evitando un lungo fermo macchina per la revisione del motore.
La Diamond Aircraft Industries è ormai divenuta la maggiore produttrice mondiale di monomotori in materiale composito, e l'unica ad offrire anche un bimotore realizzato con la stessa tecnologia.

The JAA-JAR 23 type certification of the DA 40 TDI Diamond Star, the first production aircraft worldwide with a Diesel engine, was completed by Diamond Aircraft Industries and Austro Control, the Austrian Airworthiness Authority. Within one year the Diamond engineers have achieved this goal by mating the innovative, light turbo-diesel engine Centurion 1.7, made by the Thielert Aircraft Engine Company in Germany, and the appropriately modified DA 40 Diamond Star 4-seater.
The new aircraft is able to fly at a cruising speed of 100 kts at only 40% power (10.3 liters per hour). Traditional aircraft reach this speed only at a power setting of approximately 65%, and at a significantly higher fuel consumption., requires no prop and mixture controls. The diesel engine of the DA 40 TDI using less expensive fuel (either jet fuel, or, coming soon, automotive diesel fuel) offers about 50% lower fuel consumption and increased range without aadding fuel capacity, thus conserving the useful load. Single-lever engine operation reduces the pilot's workload. The engine TBR (Time Between Replacement) is 2.400 hours with a pro rata guarantee (engine will not be overhauled, but replaced by a factory-new engine). This will reduce the downtime of the aircraft.
