Il 16 gennaio 2008, presso il sito di Manching della EADS Military Air Systems, ha volato per la prima volta il primo Eurofighter EF 2000 appartenente allo standard Tranche 2. Si tratta del settimo Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA7). Ai comandi c’era Chris Worning, pilota collaudatore EADS.
L’aereo, il monoposto tedesco GS029, incorpora i miglioramenti previsti dallo standard Tranche 2 ed avrà il compito di conseguire - nell’aprile 2008 - l’accettazione del tipo per il Blocco 8, il primo livello di “capacità” dalla Tranche 2. Questa attività sarà svolta congiuntamente con l’IPA6 operato dalla BAE Systems a Warton. IPA6 (BS031) è sostanzialmente un aereo Tranche 1 ma dispone già di un computer di volo e di avionica Tranche 2. Alla fine di novembre dell’anno scorso, l’IPA2 “italiano” ha effettuato con successo la prima serie di prove in volo con i motori EJ200 per la Tranche 2.
Le capacità aggiuntive tipiche della Tranche 2 si riferiscono principalmente ai nuovi computer di missione con la velocità e la capacità di memoria necessarie all’integrazione di ulteriori armamenti come il Meteor, lo Storm Shadow ed il Taurus. Altre differenze rispetto alla Tranche 1 si riferiscono alla tecnologia di produzione ed alla cura di alcune obsolescenze.
Sulla base del contratto di produzione della Tranche 2, firmato il 14 dicembre 2004, e del contratto export con l’Austria, il consorzio Eurofighter consegnerà 251 esemplari Tranche 2 come segue: 91 al Regno Unito, 79 alla Germania, 47 all’Italia e 34 alla Spagna. La differenza rispetto alla cifra originale di 236 velivoli è dovuta alla consegna di 15 esemplari Tranche 1 all’Austria, per cui le quattro nazioni riceveranno anche gli aerei Tranche 2 ordinati inizialmente dall’Austria. Le consegne degli Eurofighter Tranche 2 alle nazioni partner del programma inizieranno nell’estate 2008 e proseguiranno fino al 2013. Un totale di 32 velivoli sono già in varie fasi di assemblaggio presso le ditte che fanno parte del consorzio: Alenia Aeronautica, BAE Systems, EADS CASA ed EADS Deutschland.
L’Eurofighter EF 2000 è il più avanzato aereo da combattimento “doppio ruolo” esistente sul mercato, già ordinato da Germania, Italia, Spagna, Regno Unito, Austria ed Arabia Saudita. Con 707 esemplari venduti finora, rappresenta il maggiore programma di collaborazione militare europea, con contenuti tecnologici di punta che pongono il Vecchio Continente ai vertici dell’industria aeronautica mondiale. Il programma assicura più di 100.000 posti di lavoro in circa 400 aziende.

The first Tranche 2 Eurofighter EF 2000 has made its first flight on January 16, 2008, at EADS Military Air Systems’ site in Manching. Instrumented Production Aircraft Seven (IPA7) was piloted by EADS Test Pilot Chris Worning.
The aircraft (GS029), a German single seat variant, represents the full Tranche 2 build standard and its first prominent task will be to accomplish Type Acceptance for Block 8, the first capability standard of Tranche 2, in April 2008. This work will be carried out together with the BAE Systems-operated IPA6 based at Warton. IPA6 (BS031) is essentially a Tranche 1 standard aircraft but utilises the full Tranche 2 mission computer suite and avionics features. The first series of EJ200 engine flight testing for Tranche 2 was successfully concluded at the end of November 2007, with IPA2 in Italy.
The significant Tranche 2 capabilities focus mainly on the new mission computers which deliver the higher processing and memory capacity required for the integration of future weapons such as Meteor, Storm Shadow and Taurus. Differences in the build standard to Tranche 1 are related to changes in production technology or obsolescence.
Based on the Tranche 2 production contract, signed on 14 December 2004, and the original export contract with Austria, the Eurofighter consortium will deliver 251 Tranche 2 weapon systems: 91 to the United Kingdom, 79 to Germany, 47 to Italy and 34 to Spain. The difference to the original figure of 236 is based on the delivery of 15 Tranche 1 aircraft to Austria, for which the nations receive aircraft originally ordered by Austria in Tranche 2. Deliveries of Tranche 2 Eurofighters to all four Partner Nations will begin in Summer 2008 and are scheduled to run until 2013. 32 aircraft are already in final assembly at the partner companies Alenia Aeronautica, BAE Systems, EADS CASA and EADS Deutschland.
