Con l'installazione delle semiali alla fusoliera del primo prototipo dell'ERJ-170, Embraer ha raggiunto un nuovo importante traguardo del programma. Durante la seconda metà di luglio erano state unite le varie sezioni di fusoliera e l'ala era stata predisposta con le interfacce dei vari sistemi. Le semiali sono state assemblate dall'Embraer, che ha realizzato i pannelli di rivestimento e le centine, utilizzando componenti del bordo d'attacco e d'uscita, longheroni e rivestimenti prodotti da Kawasaki Heavy Industries, oltre agli slat forniti dalla Sonaca.
A questo punto, in pieno accordo con i tempi previsti, i tecnici dell'Embraer si stanno dedicando all'installazione dei vari sistemi di bordo e dei restanti sottoinsiemi del primo ERJ-170. Il roll out è previsto per il prossimo 29 ottobre ed il primo volo pochi giorni dopo, come programmato oltre due anni orsono.
Lanciato al Salone di Parigi del 1999, il programma ERJ-170/ERJ-190 comprende una famiglia di tre bireattori regionali con capacità di 70, 98 e 108 posti. L'ERJ-170, configurato per 70 passeggeri, sarà il primo ad essere sottoposto alle prove di volo ed alla successiva produzione di serie. Con una fase di sviluppo concentrata in un periodo di 38 mesi e la consegna del primo esemplare prevista alla fine del 2002, questa nuova famiglia di aerei commerciali ha già ottenuto ordini fermi per 102 esemplari ed opzioni per altri 212.

Embraer has just achieved another ERJ-170 programme milestone. Today, the wings of the aircraft were fitted to the full fuselage. While the different fuselage sections were mated during the last half of July, the final touches were given in fitting-out the wings with required systems installations. The wings were assembled by Embraer with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, which provided leading and trailing structures, spars and surfaces; Sonaca supplied slats and Embraer skins and ribs.
After accomplishing these tasks at the scheduled time, Embraer engineers and technicians are concentrating their efforts to equipping the ERJ-170 prototype with all of its systems, as well as receiving the last major sub-assemblies. This will bring the first ERJ-170 to the doorstep of the roll out scheduled for October 29 and the maiden flight shortly after, all within the schedule outlined two years ago.
Launched during the 1999 edition of the Paris Air Show, the ERJ-170 / ERJ 190 programme comprises three twin-engine jetliners configured for 70, 98 and 108 passengers. The 70-seat ERJ-170 will be the first model scheduled for flight-testing and subsequent production.
