Il secondo Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning II “da portaerei” (sigla CF-2), destinato ad unirsi al programma di prove in volo presso la Naval Air Station Patuxent River (Maryland), inizia il suo primo volo alla NAS Fort Worth (Texas), sede dello stabilimento del costruttore, il 29 aprile 2011. The second Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning II “Carrier Variant” (designation CF-2), destined to join the flight testing activity at Naval Air Station Patuxent River (Maryland), starts its first flight at NAS Fort Worth (Texas), seat of the manufacturer’s factory, on April 29, 2011. Il 29 aprile 2011, il secondo esemplare dell’F-35C, la versione da portaerei del Lightning II, è decollato per la prima volta dalla pista della Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. Bill Gigliotti, pilota collaudatore F-35 della Lockheed Martin, era ai comandi dell'aereo.
Tra breve, questo caccia stealth F-35C, denominato esemplare CF-2, si trasferirà al centro sperimentale dell'US Navy presso la NAS Patuxent River (nel Maryland), per unirsi al primo F-35C ed a quattro F-35B "short takeoff/vertical landing" già impegnati nel ciclo di collaudi in volo.

The second F-35C Lightning II carrier variant took off for the first time from Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, on April 29, 2011. Lockheed Martin F-35 Test Pilot Bill Gigliotti piloted the jet on its maiden flight.
This F-35C stealth fighter, known as CF-2, is scheduled to fly to the U.S. Navy Test Center at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, later this year, where it will join the first F-35C and four F-35B short take-off/vertical landing jets to continue flight testing.
