Il 6 maggio 2011, ha volato per la prima volta il primo caccia F-35A prodotto in serie e destinato ad essere prossimamente schierato col 58° Fighter Squadron, sulla base aerea USAF di Eglin, in Florida. L'aereo stealth è decollato dalla pista della Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, dove hanno anche sede gli stabilimenti della Lockheed Martin.
L'F-35A, ai cui comandi c'era Bill Gigliotti, pilota collaudatore F-35 della ditta costruttrice, è siglato AF-8 e sarà utilizzato ad Eglin, nei primi tempi, per l’addestramento dei piloti e dei tecnici di terra. Il Lightning II AF-8 è il primo esemplare per l'USAF appartenente al secondo lotto della Low Rate Initial Production.

On May 6, 2011, the first F-35A production fighter that will be delivered to 58th Fighter Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base (Florida) later this year, took off from Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, where the Lockheed Matin plant is located.
The stealth aircraft, which was in the hands of manufacturer's test pilot Bill Gigliotti, is designated AF-8 and will be delivered to Eglin for pilot and maintainer training. AF-8 is the first Lightning II destined to USAF to fly from Low Rate Initial Production lot two.
