Il primo rifornimento notturno nella storia del programma Lockheed Martin F-35 è stato effettuato il 22 marzo 2012 nel cielo della base Edwards, in California. Pilotato dal tenente colonnello Peter Vitt dell’U.S. Air Force, l’esemplare AF-4, un F-35A a decollo convenzionale, si è accodato ad una cisterna volante KC-135 ed ha ricevuto carburante tramite il ricettacolo dorsale.
La missione di Vitt, assistita da un F-16, si è prolungata per oltre tre ore. Oltre alla qualificazione con il KC-135, l’ “F-35 Integrated Test Force” di base alla Edwards AFB condurrà anche prove di rifornimento notturno dall’aerorifornitore KC-10.

The first night refuelling in the history of the Lockheed Martin F-35 programme was completed Thursday (March, 22) at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. Piloted by U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Peter Vitt, item AF-4, an F-35A conventional take-off and landing variant, rendezvoused with an Air Force KC-135 tanker and successfully received fuel through the F-35’s boom receptacle.
Vitt’s sortie, assisted by an F-16 chase plane, lasted more than three hours. In addition to qualifying with the KC-135, the F-35 Integrated Test Force at Edwards AFB will also conduct night refuelling tests with the KC-10.
