On the road with the G 222

In accordance with the recent sale contract for the new C-27J transporters to the Italian Air Force, Alenia Aeronautica took back in charge a number of G 222 aircraft formerly operated by the 46th IAF Air Brigade. These aircraft had been in open storage at the Pisa/San Giusto Air Base.
After refurbishment and updating, some G 222’s are still in condition to satisfy requirements from second tier air forces or to be used for humanitarian activity in remote areas. Among various discussions, the sale of 7 to 20 G 222’s to the Afghan Air Force appears particularly promising. At the beginning of May, 2008, the first G 222 was moved, by road, from Pisa to the Alenia Aeronavali Naples factory, to be restored to flight condition again.
