Il 24 settembre 2002 è stato firmato un importante accordo a lungo termine, dal valore di 12 milioni di dollari, tra la società Piaggio Aero Industries e l'americana Honeywell per la produzione di componenti dei motori Honeywell T55, di cui Piaggio Aero detiene la licenza di produzione e manutenzione per l'Italia. L'accordo prevede la possibilità di ulteriori commesse anche per altre linee di prodotto.
Il turboalbero T55-L-712E (2.235 kW di potenza massima continua) è stato tra l'altro installato, nella seconda metà degli anni '80, su 23 elicotteri da trasporto Agusta Boeing CH-47C Chinook dell'Esercito Italiano, in sostituzione del precedente T55-L-11C. Oltre alla produzione del P.180 Avanti e di aerostrutture per velivoli come il C-27J, la Piaggio Aero svolge una importante attività su licenza nel campo dei propulsori aeronautici.
(Ndr - Sviluppato dalla Avco Lycoming Division della Avco Corporation negli anni '60, il T55, sigla militare del turboalbero "a turbina libera" modello LTC4, divenne la motorizzazione standard del CH-47C. La ditta passò successivamente al gruppo Textron, divenne poi AlliedSignal Engines finchè, nel 1999, entrò a far parte del supercolosso Honeywell.)

On September 24, 2002, a 12 million USD long term agreement was signed by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio Aero Industries and Honeywell of the U.S.A., regarding the production of a series of components for the Honeywell T55 engine. Piaggio Aero holds the rights for the manufacture and maintenance of the T55 on the Italian market. The agreement may lead to further sales, also for other product lines.
The T55-L-712E turboshaft (2,235 kW max continuous power) was also fitted, mid eighties, on 23 Agusta Boeing CH-47C Chinook transport helicopters of the Italian Army, replacing the original T55-L-11C. Besides the production of the P.180 Avanti and of aerostructures such as the wing box of the C-27J, Piaggio Aero has an important side activity related to the manufacture/overhaul, under licence, of aviation engines.
(Editor's note: Mid sixties, the Avco Lycoming Division of Avco Corporation developed the T55, military designation of the LTC4 free-turbine turboshaft, as the standard powerplant for the CH-47C helicopter. After a first take over by the Textron Group, the manufacturer later became AlliedSignal Engines. At last, in 1999, the company was bought by Honeywell.)
