Alenia Aeronautica G 222 46-83, some days after its attendance at the Grosseto 1999 air show, went to Timor with an other aircraft of the same type, to support the Italian military mission there. The first of 44 G 222s entered IAF service during 1987 and recently, to replace them, IAF placed a first order for twelve C-27Js, the updated and re-engined version of G 222, to be delivered from 2001 to 2004. The C-27J is produced by LMATTS (Lockheed Martin Alenia Tactical Transport System): on September 24, 1999 the consortium put in the air, at the Turin/Caselle airport Alenia facilities, an engine flying test-bed (G 222 I-CERX/c/n 4043) to test the installation of the new Allison AE2100D3 turboprop, nacelles, aircraft interfaces and new performance.
