Il Westland WS-58 Wessex fu la versione su licenza dell'elicottero con motore a pistoni Sikorsky S-55. L'azienda britannica sostituì il Wright R-1820-84 originale con turboalbero Napier Gazelle (per la Royal Navy) e con un Bristol Siddeley (poi Rolls Royce) Coupled Gnome (per la RAF). Il prototipo volò per la prima volta a Yeovil il 17 maggio 1957 e le consegne alla Royal Navy (Wessex HAS Mk.1) iniziarono nel luglio 1961. Questo modello venne utilizzato, anche in alcune varianti successive, a bordo delle navi da guerra britanniche per ruoli comprendenti trasporto commandos, antisom, SAR ed evacuazione sanitaria. L'altro modello principale fu il Wessex HC Mk.2 per la RAF (primo volo 18 gennaio 1962). Quando nel 1970 si concluse la produzione, erano stati costruiti quasi 400 Wessex civili e militari, con un certo successo di eportazione nei confronti della Royal Australian Navy (27) e delle forze aeree dell'Irak (12) e del Ghana (2), oltre ad un esemplare per il Sultanato del Brunei.

The Westland WS-58 Wessex was basically the Sikorsky S-55 built under licence. The British manufacturer replaced the original Wright R-1820-84 piston engine with the Napier Gazelle turboshaft ( Royal Navy version) and with the Bristol Siddeley (later Rolls Royce) Coupled Gnome (RAF version). The first re-engined Wessex flew for the firs time at Yeovil May 17, 1957, with the first delivery of series aircraft to Royal Navy (Wessex HAS Mk.1) in July 1961. This model and its later variants served onboard RN ships in a variety of roles such as commando carrier, antisom warfare, SAR and medevac. The other main version was RAF's Wessex HC Mk.2 which made its first flight January 18, 1962. Production ended in 1970 with a total of almost 400 Wessex helicopters manufactured, both in civil and military variants, and significant export success to Royal Australian Navy (27), Iraqi Air Force (12), Ghanaian Air Force (2) and Sultanate of Brunei government (1).
