(Aeromedia)
Boeing B.747SP-44 ZS-SPC "Maluti" of South African Airways taking off from Rome/Fiumicino airport, December 1979. It was delivered to the African airline mid 1976, after an order for six aircraft. The Boeing B.747SP (SPECIAL PERFORMANCE) is the lover-weight longer-range version of the basic B.747. To obtain the planned typical range of 7,658 miles, the fuselage was shortened by 47 ft 1 in., the tailplane span increased by 10 ft and the height of the fin by 5 ft, giving a someway clumsy appearance to the aircraft. The propotype flew on 4 July 1975 and 45 were manufactured before end eighties, when the production was discontinued. In a typical three-class layout, the double-deck B.747SPs can accomodate 331 passengers. (Aeromedia)
