Il nuovo Bombardier Learjet 60 XR ha effettuato ieri con successo il suo primo volo, durato due ore e 20 minuti. L’aereo rappresenta la combinazione tra la velocità e le prestazioni della leggendaria famiglia Learjet ed una delle più avanzate piattaforme avioniche sul mercato, per i velivoli corporate.
Il primo Learjet 60 XR (serial number 60-294) è decollato alle 13,47 dall’Eastern Iowa Airport di Cedar Rapids, in condizioni di sole e vento, ed è rientrato alle 16,07 locali. Esso ha raggiunto la quota prevista di 17.500 piedi (5.334 m) ed una true airspeed massima di 310 nodi (575 km/h). Con 5.300 libbre (2,409 kg) di carburante, il peso complessivo al decollo era di 20.000 libbre (9.071 kg).
Il primo volo dell’aereo è stato dedicato al collaudo delle funzionalità generali della suite avionica Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21. L’affidabilità del sistema è stata testata con una serie di procedure di avvicinamento. L’equipaggio, formato dal Comandante Douglas May, pilota professionista da 15 anni, dal flight test engineer Bernie Hayes e dal copilota Keith Kankelfitz della Rockwell Collins, hanno condotto prove specifiche sugli schermi di visualizzazione dei dati strumentali, compreso l’ADI (Attitude Deviation Indicators) edge-to-edge, e l’interfaccia dell’FMS (Flight Management Systems). Durante gli avvicinamenti all’Eastern Iowa Airport è anche stato utilizzato il sistema integrato di visualizzazione della cartografia aeronautica.
La certificazione dell’aereo con la nuova strumentazione, da parte della FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration), è prevista per l’autunno del 2006, seguita a breve termine da quella di Transport Canada e dell’EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency). Dopo l’attività sperimentale, il primo bireattore Learjet 60 XR sarà poi consegnato all’acquirente all’inizio del 2007.

The new Bombardier Learjet 60 XR yesterday successfully executed a rigorous two-hour, 20-minute first flight. The aircraft combines one of the most advanced flight decks in corporate aviation with the superior performance and speed of the legendary Learjet family.
The first Learjet 60 XR (serial number 60-294) departed Eastern Iowa Airport at Cedar Rapids under sunny and windy conditions at 1:47 p.m. and returned on schedule at 4:07 p.m. CST. It achieved a maximum first flight altitude of 17,500 feet (5,334 m) and a maximum true airspeed of 310 knots (357 mph; 575 km/h). Carrying 5,300 pounds (2,409 kg) of fuel, the weight at take-off was 20,000 pounds (9,071 kg).
The aircraft’s maiden flight was dedicated to testing the general functionality of the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics suite. System operations were exercised specifically during multiple approaches. The three-man crew, which included Capt. Douglas May, a 15-year career pilot, flight test engineer Bernie Hayes and co-pilot Keith Kankelfitz of Rockwell Collins, conducted specific testing to evaluate the system’s integrated displays, including the edge-to-edge ADIs (Attitude Deviation Indicators), and the FMS (Flight Management Systems) to avionics interface. The integral chart features, capable of displaying electronic charts, were evaluated during the approaches back into the Eastern Iowa Airport.
Certification of the flight deck by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is expected to take place in the third quarter of 2006, with certification by Transport Canada and the European Aviation Safety Agency expected to follow shortly thereafter. The first Learjet 60 XR aircraft is currently on schedule to enter service in the first quarter of 2007.
