La Aeronautica Macchi SpA ha segnato la storia dell'evoluzione dell'aviazione in Italia. Fondata nel 1913 ha prodotto nella prima guerra mondiale i caccia maggiormente utilizzati dall'Esercito in quel conflitto, come i Nieuport e gli Hanriot, realizzati su licenza, e la serie degli idrovolanti a scafo centrale che negli anni di guerra hanno conteso alla marina austriaca il controllo dell'Adriatico.
Nel periodo tra le due guerre il Macchi MC.72 si rese protagonista del record di velocità per velivoli con motore a pistoni superando per la prima volta in assoluto i 700 K/h di velocità in linea retta. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale i caccia MC.200, MC.202 e MC.205 sono stati quelli maggiormente utilizzati dalla Regia Aeronautica su tutti i fronti di guerra.
Alla metà degli anni '50 la Aermacchi, grazie ad un progetto semplice ma rivoluzionario per l'epoca, pose le basi per il suo sviluppo futuro: l'addestratore jet per il training dei piloti militari. Del monomotore MB-326, entrato in servizio a partire dal 1960, ne sono stati costruiti oltre 800 esemplari per dodici forze aeree in tutto il mondo. L'MB-339 - tuttora in produzione per l'Aeronautica Militare nella sua più recente versione MB-339CD, in grado di addestrare adeguatamente i piloti che voleranno sugli Eurofighter - ne è stato il degno successore, con oltre 200 esemplari in servizio con nove forze aeree.
Con l'acquisizione da parte della Aermacchi di alcuni programmi in precedenza facenti capo alla Siai Marchetti, altra storica industria aeronautica italiana, l'azienda varesina ha completato la sua gamma di velivoli da addestramento con un prodotto riconosciuto leader mondiale per il training e la selezione iniziale dei futuri piloti militari: il monomotore biposto SF.260, 850 esemplari dei quali, nelle sue varie versioni, sono stati venduti in tutto il mondo a 27 forze aeree ed a privati. Con questa acquisizione l'Aermacchi è l'unica azienda al mondo in grado di offrire una gamma completa di velivoli per l'addestramento dei piloti militari coprendo tutte le fasi del training. Al momento sono 40 le forze aeree che hanno ordinato velivoli d'addestramento Aermacchi.

Aeronautica Macchi SpA has been a leading player in the history of the Italian aviation industry. Formed in 1913, during the first world war it manufactured most of the fighter planes used by the Italian army.
Between the two wars the Macchi MC.72 was the world's fastest piston-engine seaplane, setting a world record of 700 km/hour.
During the second world war, Aermacchi's MC.200, MC.202 and MC.205 fighter planes were the planes most widely used by the Italian air force on all war fronts. In the mid-1950s, Aermacchi sowed the seeds of its future growth thanks to a simple (but at the time revolutionary) aircraft: the MB-326 single-engine jet trainer for military pilots. Starting in 1960, the company built over 800 of the aircraft, which were sold to air forces of 12 countries around the world. The MB-339 - today still being supplied to the Italian air force in its most recent version the MB-339CD - s the worthy successor of the MB-326, and can be used for training Eurofighter pilots. Over 200 are in service with 9 international air forces.
When Aermacchi took over some programmes previously owned by SIAI Marchetti, another leading Italian aircraft manufacturer, it added to its range of training aircrafts a plane universally acknowledged as one of the world's best for training purposes and for the selection of future military pilots: the single-engine, two-seater SF.260. 850 of these have been sold (in different versions) to 27 international air forces and private clients. Thanks to this acquisition Aermacchi is the only company in the world which can offer a complete range of planes for all stages of military pilot training. So far 40 air forces have ordered training aircraft from the company.
