Se il passato ed il presente hanno consacrato la Aermacchi come leader nel settore dei trainer, il futuro è nel consolidamento di questa posizione e nella diversificazione industriale che è stata la chiave per la solidità dell'azienda negli ultimi anni. Il principale programma futuro è l'addestratore di nuova generazione M-346, il più avanzato nel mondo tra quelli in fase di sviluppo. Il prototipo è in fase di assemblaggio finale a Venegono, nei pressi di Varese, e il primo volo si prevede nel 2003. L'M-346 è il candidato ideale per costituire la base del progetto Eurotrainer che prevede un sistema di addestramento integrato per i piloti militari di dodici forze aeree europee.
La Aermacchi è stata, ed è ancora oggi, attiva in numerosi altri programmi di partnership con altre aziende Finmeccanica. Tra questi il programma F-104, Tornado, C-27J e Eurofighter 2000. Con Alenia Aeronautica e la brasiliana Embraer ha costituito la partnership industriale che ha progettato, sviluppato e realizzato l'AMX.
Nel settore delle aerostrutture la società ha lungamente collaborato con Fairchild Dornier, realizzando le fusoliere dei bimotori regionali Fairchild Dornier 328, ed è attiva nella realizzazione delle gondole motore per numerosi velivoli, dall'executive Falcon 2000 al megabody Airbus A 380. Per le gondole motore di velivoli da trasporto regionale, l'Aermacchi ha dato vita nel 1999 ad una partnership con la francese Hurel Dubois. Altre collaborazioni nel settore delle aerostrutture sono in corso con Airbus.

While its past history and present success make Aermacchi a leader in the sector of training aircraft, the company's future lies in its ability to consolidate its position and diversify its business-a strategy which in the last few years has been the key to profitability. Aermacchi's future plans concern the M-346 new-generation trainer, which is at the cutting edge of all such planes in development at present. The prototype is currently at final assembly stage in the plant near Varese in Northern Italy, and its maiden flight is expected to take place in 2003. The M-346 is the ideal training aircraft for the Eurotrainer Programme, which will see the introduction of an integrated training system for military pilots from 12 European air forces.
Aermacchi has been (and still is) involved in many other partnerships with other Finmeccanica companies, including work on the F-104, Tornado, C-27J and Eurofighter 2000 programmes. It also developed the AMX aircraft in partnership with Alenia Aeronautica and Embraer of Brazil.
In aerostructures, Aermacchi's long standing co-operation agreement with Fairchild Dornier led to the development of the fuselage of the Fairchild Dornier 328 regional aircraft. The company is also involved in the development of engine nacelles for planes including the Falcon 2000 executive aircraft and the Airbus A 380 megabody airliner. In 1999 Aermacchi also set up a joint venture with Hurel Dubois of France, and has other aerostructure joint ventures in place with Airbus.
