La Guardia Costiera degli Stati Uniti sta mettendo a punto l'introduzione in servizio operativo dell'elicottero MH-68A, la versione dell'A 109E prescelta come strumento di punta del programma AUF (Airborne Use of Force) dell'US Coast Guard. L'MH-68A, che è oggi uno dei mezzi più avanzati messi in campo dagli Stati uniti nella lotta contro la droga, equipaggerà un apposito reparto denominato Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON).
Nell'aprile 2000 la US Coast Guard selezionò, tra una rosa di candidati, l'offerta dell'A 109E Power da parte della Agusta Aerospace Corporation di Philadelphia, giudicandola come soluzione ottimale per accrescere la capacità tattica AUF del servizio. Ora la Coast Guard sarà in grado di mettere a punto gli aspetti logistici, addestrativi e di interfaccia uomo/macchina per le missioni AUF, destinate a fermare i motoscafi utilizzati per il contrabbando di stupefacenti verso gli Stati Uniti. L'MH-68A svolgerà attività di interdizione in azioni combinate con altri mezzi navali ed aerei.
Due MH-68A sono già stati consegnati all'HITRON che, ad organico completo, disporra di otto macchine. I velivoli stanno svolgendo severe prove di adattabilità alle impegnative condizioni operative di un elicottero imbarcato. Si sono invece già conclusi positivamente i Day Dynamic Interface (DI) Trials a bordo dell' USCG Gallatin (WHEC 721), un cutter a grande autonomia della US Coast Guard.
L'MH-68A si colloca nella categoria degli elicotteri da interdizione ogni tempo a corto raggio; esso è dotato di aggiornatissimi equipaggiamenti avionici, di un pannello di controllo adatto al dispositivo per la visione notturna, di radar meteorologico e di sistema FLIR autonomo. Le immagini del FLIR vengono inoltre registrate su nastro per scopi addestrativi o per essere utilizzate come prova di reato. Nella configurazione per le missioni operative, l'MH-68A sarà anche dotato di mitragliatrici.

The United States Coast Guard announced that they are finalizing development of the Agusta A109E Power/MH-68A helicopter as their principal air asset for the Coast Guard's Airborne Use of Force (AUF) program. The MH-68A Agusta aircraft will be used by the Coast Guard's Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON) as one of the newest weapons in the US war on drugs.
The Coast Guard formed a strategic alliance with Agusta Aerospace Corporation of Philadelphia, PA, in April 2000. The Coast Guard selected the Agusta A109E "Power" helicopter from among its competitors as the best value to the government for expanding the Coast Guard's AUF tactical expertise. This expertise will better enable the Coast Guard to assess the logistic, training, and personnel needs for the AUF mission. The AUF Program was designed to stop small high-speed smuggling vessels (Go-Fasts) carrying narcotics bound for the United States. The MH-68A will operate with other maritime assets to interdict these drug smuggling vessels.
The first two MH-68A aircraft were delivered as part of an eight aircraft squadron. The MH-68A is a version of the Agusta A109E "Power" commercial aircraft. The MH-68A is undergoing rigorous testing to fully develop the capabilities of this very powerful aircraft to meet the rigors of the maritime ship environment. The MH-68A recently completed Day Dynamic Interface (DI) Trials aboard one of the Coast Guard's high endurance cutters, USCG Gallatin (WHEC 721). The tests revealed that the MH-68A will have a daytime operating envelope similar to other Coast Guard helicopters and will be capable of deployment aboard all helicopter capable Coast Guard Cutters.
The MH-68A is an all-weather, short-range, interdiction helicopter, employing state of the art navigation, communication, and avionics equipment. The MH-68A includes a night vision device (NVD) equipped cockpit and contains a weather radar and a stand-alone forward-looking infrared (FLIR) system. The FLIR images are recorded on videotape to support training and Law Enforcement (LE) prosecution. The MH-68A will be armed with machine guns for mission prosecution.
