AgustaWestland inked a contract for a five year extension to their U.S. Coast Guard HITRON TEN (Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron Ten) deal. This programme is slated to be folded into Deepwater operations, when the latter is formalised.
"We might actually be the first Deepwater contract," said the unit's U.S. president Steve Moss. "We signed with Lockheed Martin, not with the USCG directly." Lockheed Martin is the service's contractor on the Deepwater integration contract.
Under the new deal, AgustaWestland will lease another two MH-68As, a dedicated version of the twin-engine A 109E Power helicopter, in addition to the eight already operating with the drug busting squadron. The MH-68As are usually deploied from Coast Guard cutters to interdict fast-moving boats carrying illegal narcotics. A number of successful interdictions take place in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
In 2000 AgustaWestland was awarded a contract by the USCG calling for the supply of eight Powers for the service's HITRON TEN programme. Final aircraft completion and delivery were provided by Agusta Aerospace Corporation, AgustaWestland's wholly owned U.S. subsidiary in Philadelphia, PA, which is also responsible for the support to the MH-68A fleet.
