Galileo Avionica, una società di Finmeccanica e componente italiana di Selex Sensors and Airborne Systems, si è aggiudicata, in qualità di principale subfornitore di Qinetiq Ltd (Prime), una commessa iniziale per la fornitura di 50 radiobersagli Mirach 100/5 per il programma ventennale CATS (Combined Aerial Target Services) dell’Ministero della Difesa (MoD) del Regno Unito. Oggi, l’agenzia per le comesse militari britannica DPA ha ratificato il contratto alla presenza di Robin Philips, Commercial Director dell’MoD, Graham Love, Amministratore Delegato della QinetiQ, Gianpiero Lorandi, Vice Direttore Generale di Galileo Avionica e Lord William Bach, Presidente di Selex Sensors and Airborne Systems.
Il valore complessivo del contratto è stimato in 70 milioni di sterline (103 milioni di Euro) con un impegno alla fornitura di 10-15 velivoli Mirach 100/5 all’anno, per dieci anni. Questo assieme ai relativi equipaggiamenti di terra ed al supporto logistico garantito per una durata di 20 anni. I radiobersagli Mirach 100/5 verranno impiegati nei poligoni militari britannici ed a bordo di unità della Royal Navy.
La commessa arriva dopo quattro anni di duro confronto con i principali competitors e prevede, oltre alla fornitura dei radiobersagli, anche lo sviluppo dell’evoluzione del sistema Mirach 100/5 per aggiungere le configurazioni CATS a quelle già operative in Gran Bretagna.
Il contratto CATS conferma l’assoluta preminenza del sistema Mirach 100/5 e contribuisce al consolidamento della posizione del radiobersaglio prodotto da Galileo Avionica nel settore degli UAV da addestramento. Il Mirach 100/5, nella sua versione navale, è stato scelto nel 1998 dall’MoD britannico quale vincitore della gara RAST, mentre nel 2003 Galileo Avionica si è aggiudicata una commessa da QinetiQ per l’introduzione in servizio del Mirach 100/5 presso il poligono britannico di Aberporth.
Progettato e prodotto da Galileo Avionica, il Mirach 100/5, che rappresenta lo stato dell’arte nel campo degli aerobersagli subsonici ad alta velocità, è un Simulatore di Minaccia impiegato per l’addestramento al tiro missilistico delle unità della difesa aerea e per la valutazione e la qualifica di nuovi sistemi missilistici antiaerei come l’IRIS-T. Il Mirach 100/5 è in servizio presso tutti i principali poligoni di addestramento europei come il CEL ed il CEM in Francia, il poligono interforze PISQ in Italia, il CEDEA in Spagna ed il poligono NAMFI (NATO Missile Firing Installation) sull’isola di Creta, dove il Mirach 100 è in servizio dal 1996. Il Mirach 100/5 è utilizzato da varie Forze Armate della NATO e da altri clienti internazionali.

Galileo Avionica, a Finmeccanica Company and Italian component of Selex Sensors and Airborne Systems, has been awarded, as principal subcontractor of QinetiQ Ltd, an initial order to provide 50 Mirach 100/5 Aerial Target Systems to the UK Ministry of Defence within the CATS (Combined Aerial Target Services) 20-years programme. Today the British Defence Procurement Agency ratified the contract in the presence of Robin Philips, Aerial Target Systems IPT Leader of the MoD, Graham Love, Chief Executive of QinetiQ, Gianpiero Lorandi, Vice General Manager of Galileo Avionica and Lord William Bach, Chairman of Selex Sensors and Airborne Systems.
The total value of Galileo Avionica’s participation in the programme is estimated at £70 million (EUR 103 million), for the provision of 10-15 Mirach 100/5 aircrafts per year for a period of ten years. In addition, it includes a 20-year guarantee for the related ground equipment and logistical support. The Mirach 100/5 Aerial Target Systems will be used at British military ranges and for shipboard operations by the Royal Navy.
The order comes after a very competitive four-year selection process and, in addition to the provision of the Aerial Target Systems, foresees the further evolutional development of the Mirach 100/5 in order to add CATS configurations to the systems already implemented in UK.
The CATS contract confirms the leadership of the Mirach 100/5 and strengthens Galileo Avionica Aerial Target System’s leading position in the training Unmanned Aerial Vehicles sector. The naval version of the Mirach 100/5 was selected in 1998 by the UK MoD as the winner of the RAST competition, while in 2003 Galileo Avionica was awarded an order by QinetiQ to introduce the Mirach 100/5 into service at the UK Firing Range in Aberporth.
Designed and manufactured by Galileo Avionica, the Mirach 100/5, a state-of-the-art product in the high-subsonic aerial targets domain, is a Threat Simulator for air-defence units training and for the evaluation and qualification of new anti-air missile systems such as IRIS-T. The Mirach 100/5 is in service at all major European firing ranges such as French CEL and CEM test ranges, PISQ joint test range in Italy, the CEDEA test range in Spain and the NATO Missile Firing Installation (NAMFI) of Crete, were Mirach 100 is in service since 1996. Besides NATO Armed Forces, the system is operated by a number of international customers.
