At Last,
the Turin Air Museum

In a particularly economically difficult moment for the aerospace industry in the Turin area, an aviation exhibit entitled "The Politecnico and Aviation" will open. It is scheduled from December 13, 1995 through January 20, 1996.

Each year, the Research and Education Museum of the Politecnico di Torino University organizes an exhibit to focus on, through an historical perspective, a specific aspect of the school's various disciplines. This year's event centers around the University's world-respected School of Aeronautical Engineering. The exhibit also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Antonio Capetti, University Dean from 1955 to 1970 and student to Modesto Panetti, the founding father of the School of Aeronautical Engineering and its renown research laboratory.

On the occasion of this year's exhibit, two unique and significant collections are brought together and shown publicly for the first time: the Morelli Collection, comprising gliders designed and built by the brothers Alberto and Pietro Morelli; and the Gabrielli Collection, made up of aeronautical equipment and components acquired from the world famous aircraft designer. These can be seen in the Aeronautical Engineering Department building. In addition, visitors can see the aircraft engines of the Capetti Collection in the halls of the Department of Energy Sciences. All three of these collections are part of the Aviation section of Turin Polytechnic's museum.
In the first days of the event, a conference will be held, discussing the historical aspects of aviation research and the close relationship between Politecnico di Torino and the aeronautical industry.

The show will exhibit many aviation items (such as documentation, measuring instruments, aircraft scale models used in research laboratories), and photographs, all of which chronicle the story of the Aeronautical Research Laboratory, one of Europe's leading research institutions, founded in 1912, at the university's Valentino Castle garden palace and, since 1958, operating in the new buildings located at Duca degli Abruzzi avenue, and its School of Aeronautical Engineering, started in the 1920's.

The general public can also access the Museum's Aviation section's new Internet service, on its World Wide Web page. In addition, visitors can also participate in guided tours of the museum's working spaces, of FIAT's Aviation Division historical collection, and of the Cantiere Aeronautico nº 1 (aviation restoration work area) of the Sezione di Torino del Gruppo Amici Velivoli Storici (Turin section of the Friends of Historical Aircraft Group). The latter is located at the Revelli Metallik company in Leinì, on the northern outskirts of Turin, where the aircraft destined to future additions of the museum's aviation section are being dutifully restored.
