Air New Zealand, nell'ambito di un importante operazione di rinnovo della flotta, ha deciso di comperare quindici Airbus A 320, con opzioni per altri venti esemplari della stessa famiglia, diventando così anche un nuovo cliente Airbus. L'ordine è stato annunciato ad Auckland, nel corso di un'apposta cerimonia, dal presidente della Air New Zealand John Palmer, dal direttore e capo azienda Ralph Norris e da John Leahy, responsabile commerciale Airbus.
Air New Zealand inizierà a ricevere i nuovi aeroplani, parte in proprietà e parte in leasing, dall'ottobre 2003. I primi A 320 saranno usati per i voli tra la Nuova Zelanda, l'Australia e le isole del Pacifico. Air New Zealand deve ancora esprimere la propria preferenza tra i motori CFM e IAE. ''Dopo una attenta valutazione, abbiamo scelto gli aerei della famiglia A320, col loro comfort, basso costo d'esercizio e capacità cargo, per soddisfare le nostre esigenze" ha affermato Ralph Norris.
Gli aerei della serie A 320 comprendono A 318, A 319, A 320 ed A 321 ed offrono il vantaggio della stessa struttura di fusoliera, di identiche cabine di pilotaggio e caratteristiche d'impiego simili. Essi sono diffusi in tutto il mondo, con unanime apprezzamento da parte dei passeggeri. L'A 320, in particolare, ha un buon raggio d'azione ed è già certificato per voli ETOPS fino a 120 minuti. ''Siamo lieti di annoverare la Air New Zealand come nostro 110° cliente per i nostri A 320'' ha dichiarato John Leahy.
Airbus ha recentemente raccolto buoni successi di vendita da parte dei vettori dell'area del Pacifico. Ad oggi la società europea ha venduto 4.500 aerei a circa 200 operatori in tutto il mondo.

Air New Zealand has concluded an agreement with Airbus to acquire fifteen Airbus A 320s, with options on up to 20 more aircraft from the same family, in a major fleet-modernisation that will make it an Airbus customer for the first time. The deal was announced at a signing ceremony in Auckland attended by Air New Zealand Chairman John Palmer, Managing Director and CEO Ralph Norris and Airbus Executive Vice President Customer Affairs and Chief Commercial Officer John Leahy.
Air New Zealand will begin receiving the aircraft - acquired through a mix of leases and purchases - in October 2003. It will use the the initial Airbus A 320s on flights between New Zealand and Australia, as well on Pacific island services. Air New Zealand has yet to select IAE or CFM engines to power the aircraft. ''After a thorough evaluation, the A320 family emerged as the best solution for our needs - it has the most comfortable cabin, the best economics and the best cargo capability - as well as being the most modern aircraft in its class" says Ralph Norris.
The best-selling Airbus A 320 family comprises the A 318, A 319, A 320 and A 321, which share the same airframe,cockpit and handling qualities. They are in widespread airline service around the world, and consistently lead in independent passenger surveys. The A320 has excellent range capability, and is already certificated for 120 min ETOPS flights. ''We are very pleased to welcome Air New Zealand as the 110th customer for the increasingly popular A 320 family,'' says John Leahy.
Airbus has a long-established and increasingly strong presence in the Pacific, where most of the major airlines have made its aircraft the cornerstone of their future fleets. Airbus has sold some 4,500 aircraft, and has around 200 customers and operators around the world.
