La Pilatus Aircraft ha annunciato la firma di un contratto con la BAE Systems per la fornitura alla RSAF (Royal Saudi Air Force) di ben 55 addestratori a turboelica Pilatus PC-21, congiuntamente ad equipaggiamenti di terra ed al completo supporto logistico dell’intero sistema addestrativo. Fino ad oggi, si tratta della più rilevante commessa mai ricevuta dal costruttore elvetico.
Nell’ambito dell’accordo tra i governi dell’Arbia Saudita e del Regno Unito noto come SBDCP (Saudi British Defence Cooperation Programme), le consegne degli aerei e del materiale di supporto inizieranno nel 2014. I nuovi PC-21 svolgeranno il ruolo di addestratori basici all’aeroporto di Riyadh, rimpiazzando rapidamente l’attuale schieramento di Pilatus PC-9 della RSAF.
Sono passati 25 anni da quando fu consegnato alla RSAF il primo lotto di addestratori militari PC-9, in accordo con la British Aerospace (come si chiamava allora la BAE Systems). Dopo così tanti anni di proficuo servizio, la Reale Forza Aerea Saudita ha scelto il PC-21 dopo un’approfondita valutazione svoltasi sia a Stans che nelle reali e torride condizioni operative, sulla base di Riyadh. Dopo Svizzera, Singapore ed Emirati Arabi Uniti, l’Arabia Saudita è il quarto paese a dotarsi del nuvo turboelica PC-21.

Pilatus Aircraft is pleased to announce that a contract has been signed with BAE Systems to supply the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) with a fleet of 55 Pilatus PC-21 turboprop aircraft, together with an integrated ground based training system and a comprehensive logistics support package. This makes it by far the biggest ever order in the history of Pilatus.
Following agreement between the Governments of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, under the Saudi British Defence Cooperation Programme (SBDCP), deliveries of the aircraft, ground based training systems and the logistics support package are scheduled to commence in 2014. The PC-21 platform will provide basic flying training in Riyadh to the RSAF and will replace the current Pilatus PC-9 fleet in the shortest possible time.
Twenty-five years have passed since the initial batch of PC-9 training aircraft were delivered to the RSAF under an agreement with the then British Aerospace. After so many years of sterling service the RSAF has selected the PC-21 aircraft following a thorough evaluation both here in Stans and under hot weather conditions in Riyadh. After Switzerland, Singapore and the UAE, Saudi Arabia is now the fourth country to procure the PC-21 aircraft.
