La Pilatus fu creata nel dicembre 1939. Nell’inverno del 1941, iniziò la costruzione dell’SB-2 Pelikan, un potente aereo metallico, ad ala alta, caratterizzato dalla capacità di volare lentamente. All’epoca, nelle strette valli alpine, veniva considerato importante poter decollare in spazi brevi e salire rapidamente in quota. Il primo volo dell’SB-2 Pelikan HB-AEP avvenne solo il 30 maggio 1944. Dopo un intenso programma di prove, l’unico esemplare costruito fu venduto all’Alpar AG di Berna. La breve carriera del Pelikan si concluse il 13 giugno 1948, durante una manifestazione aerea, quando l’aereo si ribaltò in decollo, per un problema tecnico al carrello anteriore. Lo stato del velivolo ne sconsigliò la rimessa in volo. (Pilatus Aircraft)
Pilatus was formed in December 1939. In winter 1941, construction began on a special aircraft, the SB-2 Pelikan, conceived as a “slow-flying” high-wing metal type. Aircraft with short take-off and landing and steep climbing capabilities were required for use in the narrow Alpine valleys at that time. The maiden flight of the SB-2 Pelikan HB-AEP took place on 30 May 1944. After extensive testing the only aircraft of this type ever produced went to Alpar AG in Berne. The demise of the Pelikan occurred on 13 June 1948, during an air display. An unnoticed transverse fracture led to the Pelikan’s nose wheel sheering off, causing the aircraft to flip over.
