Un ufficiale della Royal Air Force č diventato ieri il primo pilota britannico in servizio attivo a decollare con un Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, anche noto come Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
Il RAF Squadron Leader Steve Long ha pilotato l’esemplare BF-2, il secondo F-35B in versione a decollo corto ed atterraggio verticale (STOVL), nel cielo della Naval Air Station Patuxent River, nel Maryland. Era il 18° volo sperimentale di questo aereo.
Long č decollato alle 9,55 del mattino, ora locale, ha portato l’aereo fino a 20.000 piedi (oltre 6.000 metri) ed č poi rientrato alla base un’ora e mezza dopo. Sia la RAF che la Royal Navy prevedono di utilizzare l’F-35B.

A Royal Air Force officer yesterday became the first active-duty service pilot from the United Kingdom to take to the skies in a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
RAF Squadron Leader Steve Long piloted BF-2, the second short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B, over Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, logging the aircraft's 18th mission.
Long departed at 9:55 a.m. EST and flew the aircraft to 20,000 feet (about 6,000 m), before landing 1.3 hours later. Both the RAF and the Royal Navy plan to operate the F-35B.
