Singapore Airlines è entrata nella storia dell'aviazione civile, per la seconda volta nello stesso anno, con il volo inaugurale non-stop di un suo Airbus A 340-500 tra Singapore e l'aeroporto di New York/Newark. L'aereo è partito alle 12.25 locali del 28 giugno da Singapore ed ha completato la tratta di 16.600 km (9.000 miglia nautiche) per New York in 18 ore e 18 minuti. La compagnia ha battuto il precedente record di distanza senza scalo in un volo di linea che già deteneva dal 3 febbraio 2004, con l'introduzione dell'A 340-500 sulla nuova tratta non-stop Singapore-Los Angeles. In quell'occasione, l'aereo coprì 14.093 km (7.609 mn) in 14 ore e 42 minuti.
Tutta la flotta di cinque A 340-500 della Singapore Airlines è configurata con 64 lussuosi posti nella Raffles Business Class e 117 in Executive Economy Class. Le cabine di entrambe le classi dispongono di apposite aree attrezzate che permettono ai passeggeri di muoversi, socializzare e rilassarsi durante i voli a lunghissimo raggio. Il vettore asiatico pose il suo ordine iniziale per cinque A 340-500 più altrettante opzioni nel 1999; esso è anche un cliente di lancio per il mega-body A 380 con 10 ordini fermi e 15 opzioni. Singapore Airlines sarà la prima compagnia aerea a mettere in linea l'A 380, nella primavera del 2006.

Singapore Airlines has flown into the commercial flight distance record books for the second time this year, with an Airbus A 340-500 successfully inaugurating the carrier's latest non-stop round trip commercial air service between Singapore and New York (Newark). The aircraft departed at 12.25 Singapore local time on 28th June and completed the 16,600 km / 9,000 nm sector to New York in 18 hours 18 minutes. The airline beat its own previous record distance for a non-stop round trip commercial service, when it introduced the A 340-500 on the service between Singapore and Los Angeles on 3rd February 2004. On that occasion, the aircraft completed the 14,093 km / 7,609 nm sector in 14 hours 42 minutes.
Singapore Airlines' fleet of five A 340-500s are all configured with 64 enhanced Raffles Business Class and 117 Executive Economy Class seats. The cabins for both classes feature special areas and amenities for passengers to stretch their legs, socialise and relax on ultra long haul services. The airline placed its original A 340-500 order for five firm and five option aircraft in 1999; it is also a launch customer for the A 380 mega-body with 10 firm orders and 15 options. Singapore Airlines will be the first airline to put the A 380 into service in spring 2006.
