Ryanair ha annunciato la scelta dell'aeroporto di Bergamo/Orio al Serio quale sua terza base nell'Europa continentale. Dal 6 febbraio 2003 l'aggressivo vettore "low cost" irlandese schiererà fino a 5 B.737 sulla nuova base operativa italiana, situata pochi chilometri ad est di Milano. Questi aerei opereranno più di 30 voli giornalieri su sei rotte internazionali per Londra, Francoforte, Bruxelles, Amburgo, Parigi e Barcellona. Oltre ai nuovi collegamenti, Ryanair incrementera' le frequenze per Londra arrivando a quattro voli giornalieri su Stansted e due su Luton.
L'iniziativa della Ryanair creerà più di cento posti di lavoro all'aeroporto di Orio al Serio, per gestire un traffico stimato in due milioni di passeggeri nel primo anno di attività. Questi utenti, secondo il vettore, potrà risparmiare complessivamente più di 200 milioni di Euro, in confronto agli stessi voli offerti dalle compagnie aeree che operano a Milano/Linate e Malpensa. Le tariffe della Ryanair per l'area di Milano saranno inferiori almeno del 90% rispetto alle tariffe più basse dagli altri vettori.
Annunciando i dettagli dell'operazione, l'amministratore delegato di Ryanair, Michael O'Leary ha detto: "La nuova base di Ryanair nell'area di Milano rappresenta lo sviluppo naturale della nostra attività in Italia, il terzo mercato europeo per importanza. Da tempo ormai Ryanair è il primo vettore operante tra Londra e l'Italia e recentemente ha incrementato i propri servizi aggiungendo voli da Bruxelles/Charleroi e Francoforte/Hahn su diverse destinazioni italiane. L'anno scorso, Ryanair ha fatto volare più di 3,5 milioni di passeggeri da e verso l'Italia e l'anno prossimo prevediamo di trasportare più di 5 milioni di passeggeri grazie alla nostra nuova base."
Dallo scorso 20 settembre, Peter Sherrard è il nuovo coordinatore vendite e marketing per l'Italia, con base a Londra, presso l'aeroporto di Stansted. L'incarico era stato finora ricoperto da Sinead Finn, nominata direttore vendite e marketing Ryanair per l'Europa.

Ryanair announced the decision to use the Bergamo/Orio al Serio airport, not far from Milan, as their third base in continental Europe. The Irish low-cost airline, from February 6 next year, will operate a fleet of five B.737s out of the new hub. The aircraft will be used to offer more than 30 daily flights to London, Frankfurt, Brussels, Hamburg, Paris and Barcelona. Besides the new destinations, Ryanair will increase daily frequencies Orio-London to six, with four flights to Stansted and two to Luton.
The decision of Ryanair will create more than one hundred jobs at Orio al Serio, to cope with an estimated two million passengers during the first year of activity. The airline affirms that these passengers will save about 200 million euro, compared with the same flights operated by other carriers operating at Milan/Linate and Malpensa. Moreover, the fares applied by Ryanair for the Milan area will undercut the traditional carriers' lowest fares by 90%.
Announcing the new strategic move, Mr.Michael O'Leary, General Manager of Ryanair, said: "The new Ryanair base in the Milan area represents the natural development of our drive on the Italian market, the third largest in Europe. In the few past years, Ryanair has established itself as the leading carrier from London to Italy. New services have been also added recently from Brussels/Charleroi and Frankfurt/Hahn to some destinations in Italy. Past year, Ryanair carried more than 3.5 million passengers to and from Italy. Thanks to their new base, Ryanair plans to carry a record 5 million in 2003."
