Ordinato il nuovo sistema di sorveglianza SOSTAR
SOSTAR surveillance system million-€ order

SOSTAR GmbH headquartered in Friedrichshafen at Dornier GmbH, a corporate unit of EADS, was awarded the contract to develop the demonstrator of the new European advanced all-weather stand-off reconnaisance system SOSTAR (Stand-off Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar).
SOSTAR GmbH, founded in February 2001, is a joint venture formed by Thales - France (28%), EADS/Dornier - Germany (28%), FIAR of Galileo Avionica - Italy (28%), Fokker Space - The Netherlands (5%) and Indra - Spain (11%).
The contract (order volume of 85 million €) comprises the development, manufacturing and testing of the demonstrator SOSTAR-X tactical air-borne ground reconnaisance system for battlefield surveillance and target acquisition for NATO. The SOSTAR-X demonstrator, on board a Fokker 100 test aircraft, will send precise real-time ground reconnaisance and target data from the aircraft to stationary and mobile ground stations via radio communications (data link).
The main assembly of the system is a new active electonically scanned array antenna radar which can be installed on manned and unmanned airborne platforms. It allows detection and tracking of slow moving targets and high resolution imaging of fixed targets as well as target classification.
SOSTAR meets the operational requirements for the NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance Programme and is offered to NATO and European nations to cover their urgent need for surveillance of large areas for crisis and conflict management.
