Thales Alenia Space (società di Thales e Finmeccanica) ha annunciato oggi la firma di un contratto con Eutelsat Communications, uno dei maggiori operatori satellitari al mondo, per la realizzazione del satellite per telecomunicazioni W3B di Eutelsat.
In qualità di primo contraente, Thales Alenia Space sarà responsabile del disegno, progettazione, test e consegna del satellite. W3B, che sarà lanciato nel secondo semestre del 2010 fornirà servizi di telecomunicazione e broadcasting sull’Europa, sul Medio Oriente e l’Africa.
Basato sulla piattaforma Spacebus 4000C3 di Thales Alenia Space, il satellite sarà posizionato a 7 gradi Est. Disegnato per una vita operativa maggiore di 15 anni, W3B è dotato di 3 trasponditori in banda Ka e 53 in banda Ku, con una massa al lancio di 5,4 tonnellate e con una potenza elettrica, a fine vita, superiore a 12 Kw. Il satellite sarà inoltre equipaggiato con 3 antenne dispiegabili e 2 fisse.

W3B è il sedicesimo satellite, basato sulla piattaforma Spacebus 4000, che è stato assegnato a Thales Alenia Space a partire dal 2003, quando la piattaforma di nuova generazione è stata introdotta.

Thales Alenia Space announced today the signature of a contract with Eutelsat Communications, one of the world’s leading satellite operators, to manufacture and deliver Eutelsat’s W3B communication satellite.
As prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space will be in charge of the design, manufacturing, test and delivery of the satellite. Planned for a launch during the second quarter 2010, W3B will provide broadcast and telecommunications services over Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Based on Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000C3 platform, the satellite will be colocated at 7° degrees East with Eutelsat’s W3A satellite. Designed with a lifetime of more than 15 years, W3B will provide 3 Ka and 53 Ku-band transponders, will feature a maximum launch mass of 5.4 tons and will deliver more than 12 kW of electrical power at end of life. W3B will be equipped with 3 deployable and 2 fixed antennas.

W3B is the 16th Spacebus 4000 satellite ordered from Thales Alenia Space since the introduction of the new-generation platform, over 4 years ago.
