ACAO’s Triumph at the 40th City of Turin Trophy 2012 & Italian Gliding Championships 15 m

The Aero Club of Torino organized its 40th international soaring competition “Trofeo Città di Torino”, launching from the Turin/Aeritalia airport. The competition is an annual event since 1962. The Sport Commission of the Aero Club of Italy combined the race with the Italian Gliding Championships 2012 for 15 m class sailplanes.
The competition, which took place across two separate weekends, comprised five race sessions (on April 7-9 and 11-12 2012). The April 7 and 11 races were declared invalid because, due to bad weather, the pilots were unable to conclude their daily task.
The City of Turin Trophy 2012 was organized as a single Open class, covering Standard, 15 m and Open Class gliders. At the end of the Trophy, the final results of the 15 m sailplanes were extracted, to form the scoreboard of the Italian Gliding Championships 2012, 15 m Class.
A total of 24 pilots, all Italian except for one German and one Austrian, took part in the Trophy. Of course the competition was ranked by the IGC (FAI International Gliding Commission).
Alberto Sironi, flying a two-seat Arcus T glider (with Davide Schiavotto in the rear seat), was the convincing winner. The pilot, belonging to the "Aero Club Adele Orsi”, came second in the first race and was the winner of the other two valid races.
Luca De Marchi – the winner of the 2011 edition, also flying under the colours of ACAO - sailing a Ventus 2ax (15 m) single-seater, won the first race, came fourth in the second race and eight in the final race day. Thanks to this result, De Marchi was proclaimed Italian Champion 2012, 15 m Class.
Peter Hartman (ACAO), sailing an ASG 29, came third after scoring good positions in the high zone of the scoreboard: fifth in the first and third races, third in the second race. The predominance of ACAO – based at Calcinate del Pesce airfield (Varese Province) - was sealed by the fourth place of Luciano Avanzini, also piloting an outstanding Arcus T, with Mauro Brunazzo onboard.
All three races of the 40th City of Turin Trophy 2012 had short-to-medium distance courses, ranging from 157.2 to 239.4 km. In combination with variable and often difficult weather conditions over the Western Alps, it is not surprising that two races were declared invalid and, on April 8, 2012, so many pilots failed to accomplish the full task or even to take off.
