On January 17, 2025, after three years of gossip, discussions and delays, Lufthansa bought part of the share capital of Italia Trasporto Aereo better known as ITA Airways. The German airline's 41% of share capital has been valued at 325 million Euro. Due to this, ITA Airways is no longer part of the Skyteam alliance but is now a part of Star Alliance. Lufthansa's future intention is to further significantly increase their participation in the Italian airline. The new board of directors of ITA Airways includes President Sandro Pappalardo and Chief Operating Officer Joerg Eberhart, former CEO of Air Dolomiti which is the other Italian airline owned by Lufthansa.
